Coldwater Canyon Ave., a critical commuter connection between the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles, will be closed for more than a month as workers replace a 99-year-old water pipe.

The huge water trunk line, 60 inches in diameter, will be replaced with a new one that city officials say will last another 100 years.

Work at Coldwater Canyon is scheduled to begin on March 9, when preparation for digging out the old trunk line will shut down left turn lanes from Coldwater Canyon to Ventura Blvd. from either direction.

Then, starting March 23, the road will be closed entirely from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. On Sunday, and overnight during the other days of the week, one lane will be open in each direction.

The closures are expected to last until April 25.

Most of the work will take place between Dickens Ave. and Hacienda Dr., south of Ventura Blvd.
