Four puppies were rescued from a San Bernardino County house fire Saturday morning, fire officials said.

Firefighters received a call reporting a fire at approximately 1 a.m. in the 16000 block of Allen Street in Victorville, according to a statement from the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

Heavy smoke and flames surrounded the house when the first firefighters arrived, the statement read.

They heard the resident of the home say, "my babies are inside," according to the statement. The resident was referring to five puppies still inside the burning building.

Firefighters entered the home and rescued four of the five pups, the statement read. One did not survive.

It took 15 minutes to bring the fire under control, the statement read. The cause of the fire was under investigation, but fire officials said the home had no smoke detectors.
