Amgen Tour Bicyclists Race Through 124 Miles of Desert

Bicyclists raced in scorching heat from Murrieta to Palm Desert on Monday, the second day of the Amgen Tour of California.

The 124-mile stretch began at 11 a.m. and was expected to finish about 3:48 p.m. Temperatures along the way were expected to reach up to 109 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The Amgen Tour is one of the largest cycling events in the United States. The course includes about 750 miles of California roadways.

This year's race began Sunday in the San Diego County city of Escondido.

The bike tour will come to Los Angeles County on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Tuesday stage will begin in Palmdale and take a 110 miles to Santa Clarita. On Wednesday, racers will travel 84 miles from Santa Clarita to Santa Barbara.
