A brush fire erupted amid sweltering temperatures in Fontana Monday afternoon, forcing the closure of a portion of the 15 Freeway, authorities said.
Dubbed the "Lytle Fire," the blaze was reported about 1:20 p.m. It had grown to consume at least 75 acres within an hour, according to CAL Fire.
By 3:30 p.m., crews had stopped the fire's spread, the fire was 20 percent contained, and both sides of the 15 Freeway had reopened
A portion of the thoroughfare in both directions was closed at Sierra Avenue for hours earlier in the day, according to CAL Fire and a SigAlert issued for the area.
The Lytle Fire broke out amid a heat wave that threatened to bring record-breaking, triple-digit temperatures.
It was about 96 degrees in Fontana by 2:30 p.m., with 12 percent humidity and winds about 8 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
No injuries from the fire were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The blaze damaged a sign at a Jack-in-the-Box drive-thru.
