Anaheim Police Fatally Shoot Woman

Police fatally shot a woman who was allegedly armed with two knives during an investigation into a possible stabbing in Anaheim on Sunday, officials said.

Officers were called about 5:30 p.m. to a report of a stabbing at a laundromat in the 900 block of South Euclid Street, Anaheim Police Department officials said.

Their investigation led them to an apartment complex behind the business, where witnesses told officers the female may have been hiding.

The woman initially refused to come out of one of the apartments, police said.

When she emerged from the unit, she was armed with two knives, prompting officers to open fire in the courtyard, officials said. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.

No officers were injured.

It was unclear what happened to the person who may have been stabbed at the laundromat, officials said.

Two neighbors described the woman as unstable.

An eyewitness to the shooting said the officers were “justified” in shooting the woman.

“She went right at them,” said the neighbor, who did not want to be identified. “About 7-foot from the police is where they opened fire. I hate to see anybody pass away but in this case the police were justified in doing this.”

Some of the officers involved were wearing body cameras, police said.

Ex-Jets RB Chris Johnson Hurt in Drive-By Shooting

Former New York Jets running back Chris Johnson was wounded in a drive-by shooting while sitting in a jeep at an Orlando intersection early Sunday, authorities said.

The driver of the jeep was killed in the shooting and another passenger was wounded.

Johnson, 29, and passenger Reggie Johnson were both shot in the shoulder while their vehicle stopped at a traffic light.

Both were in stable condition at a hospital Sunday. A person close to Johnson confirmed it was the running back who was involved. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on Johnson's behalf.

Sheriff's deputies said another vehicle pulled up to the Jeep the men were in and opened fire. The Jeep's driver, Dreekius Oricko Johnson, was killed.

Deputies said no arrests had been made, and investigators were seeking witnesses to the shooting.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Chris and everyone impacted by this tragic event," the Jets said in a statement.

The shooting adds some uncertainty to Johnson's playing career. Though he is expected to fully recover, Johnson, who will be 30 in September, is still officially on the Jets' roster but is due to become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday, when the NFL's new league year begins. The Jets cut ties with Johnson on Feb. 14, when they declined to exercise their contract option on him -- meaning he will be free to sign with another team.

He was signed to a two-year, $8 million deal by the Jets last April, after six years with the Tennessee Titans, to provide a versatile presence in the backfield. But, he had his worst statistical season while splitting time with Chris Ivory. He ran for 663 yards -- his first season under 1,000 -- and one touchdown, while catching a career-low 24 passes for 151 yards and a score.

Johnson also rarely resembled the dynamic player with game-changing speed who ran for 2,006 yards in 2009, earning him his "CJ2K" nickname while with the Titans. He rushed for 100 yards just once last season, when he had 105 on 17 carries, including a 47-yard scamper, against Miami last December.

While it likely didn't play a major role in the Jets' decision to part ways, Johnson also was arrested in Orlando in January on a misdemeanor weapons charge.

Three people were arrested in connection with a gunbattle at a South Los Angeles medical marijuana dispensary that left a security guard injured Sunday night, police said.

Three people were trying to rob the dispensary, according to Los Angeles Police Department spokesmen.

The would-be robbers entered the dispensary in the area of Crenshaw Boulevard and 54th Street in the Hyde Park neighborhood about 7:20 p.m., said Sgt. Robert Grant of the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Station.

The security guard, suspecting that the trio was there to rob the store, asked them to leave. When they refused, he pulled out his gun, and that’s when the shootout began, police said.

The guard was hit at least once and taken to a hospital, Grant said.

The man's vital signs were stable, but it was not immediately clear if his injury was life-threatening, the sergeant said.

The three people fled out the front door. At least one of them was possibly hit, police said.

Police arrested three people, officers said Monday, but more information was not immediately available.

Police planned on reviewing surveillance video.

Child Released From Barricaded Home: LAPD

An hours-long standoff in which a man claimed to be armed and have a child with him in a South LA home garage came to an end when he surrendered to SWAT officers Sunday afternoon.

The man barricaded himself inside the home in the 5800 block of 8th Avenue just before 9 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The child was later released from the home, police said.

It was not clear what triggered the standoff with the man. He surrendered to SWAT officers about 4:30 p.m. after they launched tear gas into the garage.

Local pastor David Futch said he spoke with the man on the phone during the standoff, trying to talk him down.

"It ain't worth it, just give it up. It ain't worth it - you ain't going to win," Futch said he told the man.
Police said they had spoken with the man's family.

"I'm just grateful that he came out, his son is free and I know everything is going to be all right," Futch said.

The man, who was not identified, was taken to the LAPD's 77th Street Division station.

Woman Fights Off Attempted Kidnapping at College

A female student fought off an attacker who attempted to kidnap her at a Southern California university Sunday, marking at least the third violent crime on campus in the last two months, police said.

In Sunday’s attack, the woman was outside Pfau Library at Cal State University, San Bernardino, when a man placed his right hand over her mouth and squeezed it shut, according to the University Police Department.

The man told her, "come on, let’s go for a ride in my car," police said. That’s when the student fought back by elbowing her attacker on the left side of his body.

The man immediately released her and ran northbound past a temporary classroom building and out of sight, police said.

The woman reported the incident to police just after 3 p.m.

The attacker was described as a man in his 20s, 5-foot-8-inches tall with a thin build. He had medium-length, dark-colored hair. He was wearing dark-colored shorts and a gray T-shirt.

It was unclear if the man was part of the campus community, police said.

Students say that a spate of recent attacks has made them act more careful on campus.

"I actually do go to the library a lot, so I have been walking with friends or I just make sure I don't go alone," student Louisa Cabellos said.

Police officers from other California State University campuses have been brought in to help with the increase in violence, officials said.

On March 4, there was an attempted rape in the north stairwell of the same library, police said. The victim in that case was also a student, according to a flier distributed on campus.

On Feb. 23, a student sleeping inside his car, which was parked on the campus, was robbed and carjacked, police said.

Police have not said if any of the cases are connected.

Anyone with information was asked to call the university’s police at 909-537-5165.

Personal Finance for Kids Moves Beyond the Piggy Bank

After scouring the seemingly endless combinations of colorful bricks lining the shelves of the Lego store in Midtown Manhattan, Flynn Deady knows what he wants.

The 6-year-old has set his sights on a 77-piece box to construct a miniature Empire State Building. When it comes time to purchase the $21.99 set, it will be young Flynn picking up the tab.

“I think it’s important for him to know what to do with the money he has,” Jeff Deady, Flynn’s father, said.

While he's only in kindergarten, Flynn has a bank account seeded with $700 from his father and grandmother.  The boy will shyly tell those who ask that he wants to spend his savings on Legos, though his dad is hoping to use the account to teach his son valuable money lessons.

He's not alone.

Following years of recession and financial turmoil, a push has emerged to increase financial literacy in the classroom and at home for children, before they have to face decisions about student loans, retirement savings, salaries and credit.

Magazines, video games and books urging frank discussions about finances at a young age have hit the market. Forty-three states now include personal finance as part as their educational standards, up from 36 a decade ago, according to the Council for Economic Education Survey of the States for 2014. One 2013 survey by a mutual fund found that nearly three-quarters of parents talk regularly with their children about money.

“We need to end the epidemic of silence in families,” said columnist Ron Lieber, whose new book “The Opposite of Spoiled" encourages parents to speak more freely with their kids about finances.

Lieber, a columnist for the “Your Money” section of The New York Times, told NBC Owned Television Stations his 9-year-old daughter asks about money all the time, and he is more than happy to answer her questions.

While it's not yet clear how much of an impact the early money education will have on children's finances as they grow up, there are no shortage of available resources.

Jean Chatzky, financial editor of the "Today" show, doles out money advice to young savers through Your $: Financial Literacy For Kids, a new monthly magazine for fourth, fifth and sixth graders designed to teach students how to use and save their money.

The magazine is distributed to 2 million students in schools and available for free online for teachers. It covers topics like the cost of owning a dog, Bitcoin and using mobile phones for purchases.

“Today money is invisible,” Chatzky told NBC Owned TV Stations. “It is important to get kids to understand that it is real. When I was a kid, I put my money in the bank and I could see it growing. That was inspiring. Today, because of higher interest rates, you put your money in the bank and nothing happens.”

Some major banks are also getting in on the early money education trend. At the beginning of February, Visa partnered with Michigan Treasurer Kevin Clinton, the nonprofit Jump$tart Coalition and Detroit Lions tight end Eric Ebron to expand a free educational video game statewide. “Financial Football” is designed to teach students about personal finances with sport-themed fun.

Citibank, meanwhile, is working with schools and organizations to expand its own financial literacy workshops. The financial institution has invested $75,000 for workshops at Perspective Charter Schools in Chicago.

Greg Lowe, development officer at Perspective Charter Schools, says the workshops, which teach students how to conduct a cost-benefit analysis for a college education and how to maintain a good credit rating, fill a “huge need” for the school system.

“High school students just don’t have those experiences,” Lowe said.

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has put his own money into giving young kids a financial boost, launching an animated series called "The Secret Millionaires Club" that aims to teach financial decision-making and business entrepreneurship for children 7 to 14.

Not all parents believe discussions about money, long taboo in society, should start at such a young age.

Joanna and Julian Watkins, on vacation in New York from England, said they aren't making hands-on finance experience a priority for their 8-year-old son Nicholas. They also believe such instruction should come from the home, not the classroom, at such an age.

“It’s a personal choice for the parents," Joanna Watkins said. "We are getting into how to have an allowance at the moment, although he isn’t saving any money yet. Everything in there is our doing.”

It's not yet clear how helpful such programs will be in the long run. Some studies show that finance classes do not provide any real skill set for managing money. One study published in “Management Science” found that "even large interventions with many hours of instruction have negligible effects on behavior" less than 2 years down the road.

Another study compared the financial health of students who graduated both 15 years before and 15 years after financial literacy education was mandated in all 43 states. They found no difference.

But the researchers, including Shawn Cole, a professor of finance at Harvard Business School, did find that students in states that required them to take additional math classes managed their money better, especially when it came to home equity and investments. He believes that emotions might get in the way of financial decisions without key math skills.

Cole told NBC that with his own kids, ages 4 and 6, he talks about money a little but spends more time on teaching them math.

“It might be time to get them bank accounts though,” he said.

Where they were from in California was not immediately known.

Police charged the women with “aggravated damage on a building of historical and artistic interest” after angry tourists spotted them, according to Republica.

“We apologize for what we did,” the pair reportedly said. “We regret it, but we did not imagine it was something so serious. We’ll remember for a lifetime.”

Rev Jackson Wades Into Chicago Race

The Rev. Jesse Jackson on Monday used a pile of garbage on Chicago's South Side to illustrate how city services are lacking in impoverished neighborhoods and said Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia was the better candidate to lead the city.

The high-profile endorsement from Jackson is a big boon to Garcia as he tries to earn the support of black voters, who are seen as crucial in the April 7 runoff with Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Garcia over the weekend was endorsed by Rep. Danny Davis and by Teamsters Local 743, which endorsed Emanuel four years ago. Meanwhile, a poll out over the weekend continued to show that Emanuel and Garcia are in a statistical dead heat in the race.

But Garcia also has big-name detractors. At a separate event Monday, a group of city leaders said everything Garcia has promised during the campaign --  additional police officers and the removal of all red light cameras -- could cost the city an additional $1.9 billion.

"Since November, Chuy Garcia has been promising, promising, and promising to spend the city's money like it's a money tree," said Ald. Carrie Austin (34th), who chairs the City Council's Committee on the Budget and Government Operations. "But after 20 years in public office, he isn't doing, he has no plan to pay for all of these pipe dreams."

Emanuel worked with Jackson's son, Jesse Jackson Jr., when both were in the House of Representatives. Jackson Jr. is currently serving time in prison on charges he used campaign cash on personal items. Jackson Jr.'s wife, Sandi Jackson, was a Chicago alderman until she resigned in 2013.

Innocent Man May Not Be Freed Yet

$

A man who served nearly 21 years in prison for a rape and kidnapping he didn't commit has been exonerated after new DNA evidence proved his innocence — but officials say he may not be freed yet, because of charges that he destroyed a prison sink while in solitary confinement.

The charges against Angel Gonzalez, now 41, in a 1994 rape and kidnapping in north suburban Waukegan have been dismissed, Lake County State’s Attorney Mike Nerheim announced Monday.

Gonzalez served nearly 21 years at the Dixon Correctional Center, after he was convicted and sentenced in 1994 to more than 50 years in prison.

The Innocence Project, which worked to free him, says that Gonzalez, who spoke little English, falsely confessed in 1994 after being interrogated for several hours "under humiliating circumstances using deceptive interrogation practices." He had no prior criminal record, the group added.

Recent DNA testing proved his innocence, the group said.

"If words were enough I'd say I'm sorry and I am sorry," said Nerheim. ""we are sorry this has happened and it seems trivial when you’re talking about 21 years of a person’s life but it’s important to note that we did work alongside the Innocence Project."

Although both the rape and kidnapping charges were vacated Monday, Gonzalez was not released from prison because of an outstanding conviction on a charge of criminal damage to state property from 1996, according to the Department of Corrections.

That 3-year sentence stems from an incident where he allegedly destroyed a sink while in solitary confinement, officials said.

Officials expect a hearing on that charge soon.

"I just to say thank you to everybody for coming for brother," said Gonzalez's brother Saul Gonzalez. "I hope he can get out soon."

On July 11, 1994, prosecutors say a woman was abducted by two men from her apartment.

The Chicago Tribune reported the two men dragged the victim to a sedan and drove her to another location, where the woman says she was raped in some bushes by a man she said was Gonzalez. The woman ran and hid from her attackers, but the second man reportedly found her and raped her.

An officer testified in court that Gonzalez matched the description the woman gave them for one of her attackers, and the woman identified him, testifying in court that “he was wearing the same clothes, everything,” the Tribune reported.

Gonzalez reportedly confessed to participating in the assault. Despite the confession, he also gave officials an alibi, which the Innocence Project claims wasn’t fully investigated.

New DNA testing revealed that forensic material from the victim came from two men, but neither of the DNA profiles matched Gonzalez.

"This new evidence is substantial and casts serious doubt on the guilt of Angel Gonzalez," the Lake County State's Attorney's office said in a release.

Prosecutors say the news has been hard for the victim in the case, who is now in her 50s and whose attackers have not been caught.

Gonzalez, a Mexican national, was also in the process of obtaining a visa before he was arrested, but it wasn’t clear if he would be deported after his release, according to Innocence Project spokesman Paul Cates.

A 34-year-old New Hampshire man skiing at a Make-a-Wish fundraiser plunged 60 feet off the slopes to his death Monday morning.

Samuel Moore of North Conway was skiing in the 5 Corners area at Wildcat Mountain in Pinkham Notch, New Hampshire, around 9:30 a.m. when he lost control, tumbled down the trail and fell over a 60-foot drop, state police say. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moore was at the ski mountain participating in the Make-A-Wish Foundation's 12th annual 100,000 Vertical Foot Challenge fundraising event.

According to Skiwildcat.com, the field was limited to 40 participants and challenged skiers and riders to log a total of 48 runs on the Lynx Trail to achieve 100,000 vertical feet over nine hours, non-stop.

That leaves an average of 4.5 minutes to complete each run. The event was open to skiers and riders of all abilities, and helmets were required for the event.

Prior to this year, the event had raised more than $595,000 to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of New Hampshire.

Organizers stopped the event following the incident, Wildcat said.

"This is a tragedy to what is traditionally a fun and self-fulfilling challenge for participants and a major fundraising event for Make-A-Wish of New Hampshire," Wildcat General Manager Brian Heon said. "My thoughts, and those of Wildcat Mountain and its employees, go out to the family and friends of this man."

Assisting at the scene were the Gorham EMS, Wildcat Ski Patrol, the U.S. Forest Service and state police. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police Detective Sgt. Sheldon Belanger at 603-846-5517.

Reward Grows in Newlywed Killing

The reward has grown to $12,000 for information about the young men believed to have shot dead an Iraqi man as he took photos of the falling snow last week, less than three weeks after he moved to Dallas from Iraq.

Ahmed Al-Jumaili, 36, was with his wife and brother when he was fatally shot last week in an apparently random shooting in the parking lot of the Walnut Bend Apartments late Wednesday night.

"I know someone in this community. Someone knows the identity of one or all four of those individuals, and they are going to come forward to us," said Dallas police Maj. Jeff Cotner.

Alia Salem, executive director of the Dallas/Fort Worth chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said Monday that $7,000 has been raised to help in the investigation into the death of 36-year-old Ahmed Al-Jumaili.

CrimeStoppers had previously announced a separate $5,000 reward, bringing the total to $12,000.

"As North Texans, we cannot let this senseless violence go unanswered," said Salem.

CAIR teamed up with the Murrell Foundation to raise the reward for information that leads to justice.

"It is the responsibility of the citizens of this community to step forward and help stop violence in our community," said John Murrell.

Tipsters can remain anonymous and should call 214-373-TIPS (8477) or Detective Montenegro with the Dallas Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 214-671-3624.

Dallas police have released surveillance video that shows four people walking in the apartment complex where 36-year-old Ahmed Al-Jumaili was killed on March 5. Those four people could be involved in the killing, police said.

Al-Jumaili and his wife and brother were taking pictures outside their apartment when police said a group of people began firing a gun at random, hitting Al-Jumaili in the chest.

An ambulance brought Al-Jumaili to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where he soon died.

Al-Jumaili had moved to the United States just 20 days earlier to marry his wife, after working up to the move for more than a year, his father-in-law Mohammed Al Taae said.

In Iraq, he had been a contractor for an Internet company in Baghdad and often worked with the U.S. Army and Air Force.

Al Taae told NBC 5 he couldn't believe his new son-in-law had escaped ISIS and other dangers in Iraq, only to die in a random and senseless shooting in Dallas.
