Ellis Hutson buried his cat, Bart, after it was hit by a car. Hutson says he found the cat "cold and stiff," but five days later the cat came back. "It's a miracle. All I can think is, 'It's a miracle.' " said Hutson. "I can't explain it. The cat was buried. The cat was dead, and my neighbor brought it back to my house."

Mom Shocked at Suspect's Death

The mother of a Florida teen who was gunned down at a 2007 party said she was shocked when the suspect in the shooting was found shot to death in a car on the side of I-95.

Trina Kancey said she's finally getting closure, although it's not the kind she wanted or expected.

Kancey's son, 16-year-old Samuel Brown, was attending a graduation ceremony at the Polish American Club of Miami back in June 2007 when he was shot and killed along with another victim.

"I will never forget that's a day that is embedded in me forever," Kancey said. "He was the peacemaker that night, the peacemaker who was killed. He was killed."

Prosecutors identified Labron Brown as the gunman and he was arrested. But Labron Brown, who was just 15 at the time of the shooting was released after prosecutors dropped the charges following two years of court hearings.

Just one witness out of the 300 people who were packed into the club came forward, but the witness later recanted their story.

"My son's friend didn't even want to testify and that's hard as a mother," Kancey said. "My son stuck up for you and you wouldn't come to the court and give a deposition."

Kancey said she kept an article of the day Brown was released.

"I don't know why I kept it, I guess as a reminder that he was free and he got away with murder," she said.

Brown was arrested again in 2012 in connection with the shooting death of a man during a robbery in Miami Gardens. But again the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office didn't have enough evidence to prosecute.

"I was like, wow he killed somebody else, now they have him and I was shocked to learn he was out again," Kancey said.

Flash forward to Saturday, when two men were found shot to death inside a car on I-95 near Northwest 54th Street in Miami-Dade. The driver of the car was Labron Brown.

"I was just like, wow, another mother has to bury her son," Kancey said. "I wasn't rejoicing because he was killed because I know how it feels as a mother to lose a child."

Messages left by NBC 6 for Labron Brown's mother weren't returned Tuesday.

The shooting, which also left 23-year-old Kenneth McCoy dead, is under investigation.

Kancey said she has prayed every day since her son was killed, but now her prayers are directed somewhere else, to Labron Brown's mother.

"I pray for her that she gets through this and I know that was her only child and I hope he comforts her and he comforts me, that's my prayer for her," she said.

Firefighters are looking for a man seen in surveillance video torching a Yorba Linda house and causing a blaze that hurt a woman and her dog who were inside.

The video, released Wednesday, shows a heavyset man torching the home then disappearing.

"He might have been burned when the vapors ignited, just before he threw a container of fuel through the broken window," said Capt. Steve Concialdi of the Orange County Fire Authority.

A woman and dog named Buddy were treated for smoke inhalation after the blaze. The Nov. 3 fire caused nearly $1 million in damages.

In the video, the man wearing a red pullover jacket can be seen hurling an object through a window then briefly becoming enveloped in flames. He took off on a BMX bike, officials said.

He's described as having a dark complexion, brown or black hair, and wearing clear glasses. He may have suffered burns to his right hand, arm and face as well as singed facial hair.

He was last seen wearing bluejeans and the red pullover jacket which may have also been burned.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Orange County Fire Authority Investigations Services Section at 714-573-6720 or ocfainvestigator@ocfa.org.

2nd Teen Arrested in Stabbing of Boy at Middle School

Deputies arrested a second teenager in connection with the stabbing death of a 14-year-old boy outside an East LA middle school, officials said Wednesday.

The victim, identified by the coroner as Steven Cruz, 14, was attacked with a sharp object that authorities originally described as scissors Jan. 23 at David Wark Griffith Middle School, near the high school he attended, according to the LA County Sheriff's Department.

While the LAUSD first said Cruz was attacked with scissors, deputies later described the weapon as a knife.

Authorities arrested a 13-year-old boy one day later. Officials say that teen got the knife from a 14-year-old boy, who was arrested on Tuesday. Both have been booked on suspicion of murder.

At a weekend vigil, mourners left roses above a picture of Cruz in a cap and gown. Cruz's family hasn't spoken with the media, but they did set up a fundraising page online to help pay for services.

"He was friendly and easygoing. He loved his friends and his family with all his heart," his family wrote on the page. It said he was "at the wrong place, at the wrong time" when he was attacked.

NFL Debuts 1st Anti-Domestic Violence Super Bowl PSA

The NFL will air its first public service announcement against domestic violence as part of its No More campaign during the Super Bowl on NBC on Sunday.

A 30-second ad will air for $4.5 million, but the NFL has already released a chilling 60-second version. The ad is based on a real 911 call a domestic violence victim made in October.

The unsettling video starts out showing a disheveled home, with an unmade bed, books thrown on the floor, a sink piled up with unwashed dishes and a fist-sized punch in the wall. A woman is speaking in a rushed tone with the 911 dispatcher, pretending that she is ordering a pizza.

The dispatcher soon realizes the woman is unable to speak openly in her house because her abuser will hear. The final scene shows a framed picture of a woman torn from the wall and left by the trashcan.

The screen fades to black, and a message appears in white: “When it’s hard to talk, It’s up to us to listen.”

“The goal of the PSA is to activate and engage the vast audience of men and women across America in saying NO MORE to domestic violence and sexual assault,” No More director Virginia Witt told Today.com.

The NFL has faced a number of high-profile domestic abuse allegations involving its players, most notably Ray Rice.

That case inspired many women to speak out on social media using the hashtag #WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft and restarted debates about the NFL's history of players accused of domestic abuse.

“Public awareness is the first, essential step toward changing the culture into one where domestic violence and sexual assault no longer happen,” said Witt.

A California State University, Long Beach student has been diagnosed with measles, the latest case in an outbreak that has affected dozens in the state, the university confirmed Wednesday.

A small group of students were exposed to the virus at an off-campus location during winter break, the week of January 12, a school news release stated.

The student diagnosed with the measles does not live on campus and has since recovered.
CSULB administrators and the Long Beach Department of Health are "working closely together."

The university’s class schedule has not been affected, and health officials said they don't believe the student went to the campus after getting measles.

More than 70 cases of measles have been reported in California in less than two months. At least 50 of the cases have been linked to a mid-December outbreak that began at the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim, state health officials said.

It was not immediately clear whether the Long Beach student's case was linked to Disneyland.

Measles is an airborne disease spread through sneezing or coughing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Hernandez Trial Begins Thursday

Opening statements are set for Thursday in the Aaron Hernandez murder trial following a 2-day delay because of the blizzard.

A full jury including 12 jurors and 6 alternates was seated Monday. Superior Court Judge Susan Garsh spent more than a week questioning potential jurors to weed out people who are biased, have a hardship, or have a valid reason to be excused. More than 1,000 people were originally called.

Hernandez, 25, is charged with killing Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old semiprofessional football player from Boston who was dating the sister of Hernandez's fiancee. At the time of the killing on June 17, 2013, Hernandez had a $40 million contract with the Patriots.

Prosecutors say Hernandez and two other men, Carlos Ortiz and Ernest Wallace, picked Lloyd up at his home in Boston's Dorchester section and took him to an industrial park near Hernandez's home in North Attleborough, where he was shot to death.

Prosecutors haven't said who pulled the trigger but said Hernandez orchestrated the killing. Ortiz and Wallace have pleaded not guilty to murder charges and will be tried separately.

Nearly 300 people are on the prosecution's list of potential witnesses, including Patriots coach Bill Belichick and team owner Robert Kraft.

Among the others listed as potential witnesses is Hernandez's fiancee, Shayanna Jenkins. Prosecutors have said Jenkins lied dozens of times to the grand jury investigating Lloyd's killing, including when she said she couldn't remember where she disposed of a large box from the basement of their home that Hernandez apparently told her to get rid of. She had been granted immunity before her grand jury testimony.

The trial, expected to last six to 10 weeks, will not be the end of Hernandez's legal troubles. He faces separate murder charges in Boston, where he is accused of killing two men after one of them accidentally spilled a drink on him at a nightclub in 2012. That trial date has not yet been set.

#GoodellMustGo Ad Blitz Ahead of Super Bowl

An organization that has campaigned for the dismissal of the NFL's commissioner for his handling of domestic violence cases involving players has a new online ad targeting Roger Goodell ahead of the Super Bowl.

The new 15-second ad from advocacy group UltraViolet features a football player in helmet, pads and other gear tackling a woman. The theme of the ad is "Let's take domestic violence out of football."

The video, part of an online ad buy that the organization said will reach 1 million people, closes with the hashtag #GoodellMustGo and will run Thursday through Super Bowl Sunday. The group used the same hashtag on banners it flew over NFL games earlier this year.

"It is clear that Roger Goodell’s NFL took no initiative to prosecute domestic abusers and protect their victims and it is clear that the NFL will not take domestic violence seriously until Roger Goodell is gone," UltraViolet co-founder Shaunna Thomas said in a statement.

It's not the only ad addressing the domestic violence issue and the NFL's handling of the high-profile case last year involving former Ravens running back Ray Rice. NoMore.org, a coalition of corporations, advocacy and service organizations behind ads featuring well-known athletes, has a Super Bowl ad that depicts a 911 domestic violence call.

A 30-second version of the ad will be broadcast during the first quarter of the Super Bowl Sunday.

The ads come just weeks after the release of a report from former FBI director Robert Mueller that stated there was no evidence the league received a video of Rice striking his then-fiancee in a casino elevator. But the report said the NFL failed to investigate the case properly and should have done more with the information it did have.

The video was published online in September, leading to calls for further punishment of Rice after the league initially handed down a two-game suspension. The league handed down an indefinite suspension after the elevator video surfaced.

In November, Rice won an appeal of the indefinite suspension. A judge called Goodell's decision "arbitrary" and an "abuse of direction."

Gang homicide detectives and family members of Maria Elena Rivas are expected to announce the arrest of two people in the stabbing death of the 62-year-old woman.

A thief snatched Rivas' purse and stabbed her as she was walking home from Ralphs Dec. 22.

Store security video showed Rivas paying for her groceries minutes before the stabbing.

Rivas' nephew, Enrique Contreras, reacted with anger and frustration.

"Why can't the criminals (have) just taken the money?" he said shortly after his aunt's death. "Why did they have to take her life?"

At a candlelight vigil three days after Christmas, mourners remembered a woman who "never disrespected anybody."

Rivas, a longtime resident of South Los Angeles, often stopped at the store after riding the bus home from her job as a seamstress.

Details about the arrests were expected to be made available during an afternoon news conference.

Woman Found Stabbed to Death Near LAPD Station

A woman was found stabbed to death in a Pacoima parking lot across the street from a Los Angeles Police Department station Wednesday night.

Officers arrived on the scene at 7:15 p.m. after witness discovered the body of the victim, who was in her 40s, between a 7-Eleven and a car wash just 50 yards from the LAPD's Foothill Division, officials said.

Investigators believe she was stabbed to death in the area, and then dumped in the parking lot. Details regarding the attacker's description were not immediately available, and detectives are examining surveillance footage for clues. They also said evidence from witnesses would be crucial to solving the case.

"It is unusual for someone to be so brazen and kill someone across from a police station... obviously  they had a goal in mind and they accomplished that goal, however they had to do it," LAPD detective Michael Berretta said.

Investigators have yet to rule out the murder being a gang-related incident.

VA Finds New Partnership to Better Aid Homeless Vets

$

It was the week before Christmas when the phone rang "out of the blue," as high-powered lawyer Ron Olson begins the story of the breakthrough that led to a legal U-turn for the VA and a new partnership for helping homeless veterans.

On the phone was Robert McDonald, West Point Graduate, Army veteran, and recently retired CEO of the Proctor & Gamble company, who had answered President Obama's call to tackle the problems in the Department of Veterans Affairs as its new Secretary.

Among the big issues: the high rate of homelessness among veterans, nowhere more than in Los Angeles. President Obama wants it solved this year.

Olson and McDonald had never met face to face, but they had common friends. McDonald wanted to discuss the lawsuit in which a federal-district court judge had ruled against the VA's practice of leasing portions of its West LA Healthcare campus for purposes that had nothing to do with veterans' health.

The VA leases space for an athletic field to the private Brentwood school, for UCLA's Jackie Robinson baseball stadium, for laundry services for Marriott Hotels, among other uses Judge James Otero found inconsistent with the requirements for the 387 campus and for the VA.

Plaintiffs contended these uses took away from the services the VA owes veterans.

Rather than accepting the 2013 ruling, the VA, under then-Secretary Eric Shinseki, appealed, a process that dragged on. Mediation failed.

A name partner in the prominent downtown LA law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson, Ron Olson had volunteered his legal skills "pro bono" and served as one of the lead attorneys for the homeless veterans who constituted the plaintiffs.

On the phone, Secretary McDonald came straight to the point.

"'This is not a problem that should require lawsuits or litigation,'" Olson recalled McDonald telling him.

"'I agreed,'" Olson said he replied. "I'd been trying to get that point across for a while," he added with a slight chuckle.

For his part, McDonald learned that the original prime mover behind the lawsuit had been Bobby Shriver, the former Santa Monica city councilman who is also a Kennedy. Shriver had recruited the legal team to file the case.

"I've known Bobby for years," McDonald said. The Shriver family has been deeply involved with the Special Olympic — mother Eunice Kennedy Shriver co-founded it — and for three decades, Proctor & Gamble has partnered as a principal corporate sponsor.

Catalyzed by the interconnected relationships and trust. the result was a meeting of the minds. A series of discussions led to the drafting of a framework for not only a settlement of the lawsuit, but also a partnership to develop a "new master plan" for the West LA campus and improve "care and services for homeless veterans."

"We have moved from adversaries to partners in a month's time," Olson told those who assembled Wednesday inside a meeting room of the VA's West LA hospital where McDonald, flanked by Olson and Shriver, announced the agreement.

The document sets forth a series of tasks of deadlines, including writing a "veteran homelessness strategy and action plan for Greater LA no later than 2/13/05."

The new Master Plan, including provisions for building new veterans housing, is due by October 16.

But the first deadline calls for the parties to ask the District Court to vacate the lawsuit ruling — in effect, to make it as if the case now known as Valentini V. McDonald had never been filed.

Olson defended voluntarily surrendering this legal stick to hold over the VA, citing the benefit of the VA dropping its appeal, and calling this new partnership "a far superior way to go."

Skepticism remains among veterans.

"We've been hearing things for years," said Charles Williams, a disabled Army veteran who has become a familiar sight outside the VA campus on San Vicente Blvd.

"They need to get moving," said Norma Stone, a 79-year-old veteran of the US Air Force. Attending the news conference, she took the microphone for the final question from the audience, imploring the trio at the lectern to turn the plan into reality.

The unveiling of the plan comes during the annual "point in time" census to count homeless veterans. Estimates vary, but it's believed there are at least six thousand in Los Angeles County. Thursday night McDonald plans to join a team canvassing the streets in and around downtown LA's skid row.

McDonald said he will take the opportunity to learn from homeless veterans what solutions they would seek.

The West LA VA campus dates back to the 19th century, when the land was deeded to the federal government as an "Old Soldiers Home" for veterans of the Civil War.

In the 20th century its services expanded, but in the 1960s, its commitment to housing veterans was limited. Apart from those admitted to the hospital, the number of residents currently residing in facilities on the campus is fewer than one thousand, according to the VA Public Affairs office. One facility, opened in 2010 by CalVet, operate at only half its 396-bed capacity because its kitchen has yet to be built.

In recent years, Robert Rosebrock of the "Veterans Revolution" and other advocates have argued the VA could make an immediate impact by erecting tents and modular housing as temporary shelter in what is now open space on the campus. This would serve as temporary shelter until new permanent structures can be planned, approved, and built.

When the issue was raised at the news conference, some in the audience applauded.

McDonald said he did not yet know enough about LA's specific needs to determine whether it would be appropriate, but said he hoped to learn more speaking to homeless veterans Thursday night.

Shriver's role in the partnership will involve integrating the private and philanthropic sectors into expanding housing and services for homeless veterans.

Also to be dealt with are the leased uses targeted in the lawsuit. The agreement calls for developing an "exit strategy" for non-VA entities that won't fit within the new master plan.

"We applaud this outcome and understand the need to find lasting housing solutions for our local veterans," reads in part a written statement from UCLA Chancellor Gene Block. "We are eager to work with Secretary McDonald to strengthen the VA's relationship with UCLA, including Jackie Robinson Stadium," an apparent indication that, new agreement notwithstanding, UCLA hopes its baseball teams will be able to continue playing on the VA campus.

Imprisoned Hit Man Gives Speech in Downtown LA

The president of the LA Police Commission called for an investigation into the use of LAPD resources to arrange a secretive meeting among an imprisoned ex-Mexican Mafia hit man, top law enforcement officials and wealthy business leaders, calling it "embarrassing."

Rene Enriquez, who is known as "Boxer," was given a police escort to a secured downtown LA location on Spring Street, where sources said he was to give a crowd of about 125 firsthand insight about the inner-workings of the criminal enterprise.

"A whole lot of city resources were wasted here when they shouldn't have been," Police Commission President Steve Soboroff said.

Enriquez's appearance required a "multi-hour SWAT and LAPD presence," Soboroff said.

The cost of the operation, which included crossing county lines, was not immediately known. It was unclear how many other agencies were involved in Enriquez's appearance.

Enriquez, who is the subject of the book "The Black Hand: The Bloody Rise and Redemption of 'Boxer' Enriquez, a Mexican Mob Killer," worked his way up from enforcer to shot caller for the organization known as La Eme before his arrest and conviction. He is serving two 20-to-life sentences for murder.

The meeting was meant to offer LA-area law enforcement chiefs a chance to learn how a "transnational criminal enterprise was built, branded and marketed," the LAPD said in a statement to NBC News that acknowledged an LAPD group met with a convicted criminial.

"This individual talked with the sophistication and knowledge of a corporate CEO," said LAPD deputy chief Michael Downing, who didn't confirm Enriquez was the speaker.

The cost of the event was relatively small, with about 23 officers guarding the perimeter, while police chiefs from cities like Long Beach and Fullerton attended the talk. The event was secure, Downing said.

"In retrospect, we probably could have picked a better location that didn't have such an impact on downtown Los Angeles," Downing said.

Downing added that the speaker was is a deceptive, manipulative individual "in jail for horrific crimes," and that "even though he's providing this information for us, (we) don't lose sight of who he is as an individual."

A source who attended the session said Enriquez had the air of a corporate leader, providing "a rare look into life of a criminal corporate executive." The source, who asked not to be named, said Enriquez discussed "gang franchising, marketing, sales, merchandising and branding."

“We live in a dangerous city,” said another man who attended the session.

A spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, which is responsible for Enriquez, had no immediate comment on the appearance, and was checking late Wednesday to see whether it had been approved.

"People make mistakes and it's our responsibility to find out exactly what happened," Soboroff said. "We need to find out how exactly much that cost and see how much money we can recover. "

NBC4's Toni Guinyard and Willian Avila contributed to this report.

Owner Says Deputies Wouldn't Help Dog They Shot

A Lawndale man is planning legal action after a Los Angeles County sheriff's detective shot and killed his family dog at his home.

The shooting took place at the 170th Street home about 9:30 p.m. Monday when detectives, who officials say were following up on a criminal case, were met by Ronald Padilla's Italian mastiff.

Sheriff's officials said one of the detectives opened fire on the snarling dog when it charged at him.

Padilla disputes that claim.

He said the detectives were searching for his brother in a front house to serve paperwork about a change of court date for a felony juvenile citation. When no one answered the door, the deputies went to the rear of the property where Padilla lives in a back house.

Padilla, a father of three, says he was getting ready to go to bed when he heard three rounds fired. At least one of the bullets struck his 1-year-old pup named Knox on her side.

"I went outside and I noticed my brother was already outside yelling at them, 'What did you guys do? Why did you shoot my dog? You guys had no business in my property,'" Padilla said.

Padilla says nothing was done to save the dog's life. Animal Control was called but the dog died before they got there - he took photos and video of the moments after the shooting.

"They were searching for bullet (casings) instead of helping my dog," Padilla said.

Padilla says he didn't hear his dog bark or growl before shots rang out. He says the detective apologized but had nothing else to say.

Padilla says the gunfire could have struck his children, ages 10, 7 and 5, who were at home.

"What am I supposed to tell my children now? A cop shot our dog in our own property?" Padilla said. "I took really good care of my dog. To me it was like family. My dog never bit anybody."

The case was under review by internal affairs, per department policy, said sheriff's Sgt. Nick Daniel.

Kobe Bryant Has Surgery, Season Over

$

Kobe Bryant underwent successful surgery on a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder, the Los Angeles Lakers announced on Wednesday, and the 19-year veteran expects to miss the remainder of the 2014-15 season.

Wednesday's news came with little shock, but it still carried with it great meaning. Bryant had now suffered season ending injuries in three successive seasons. At the end of the 2012-13 season, Bryant ruptured his Achilles tendon. In the 2013-14 season, Bryant lasted only six games before suffering a fracture in his knee. For 2014-15, Bryant completed 35 games and waited until the halfway mark in the season before his shoulder gave out.

The expectation that Bryant would go under the knife and end his season leaked out of the Los Angeles Lakers' offices on Friday, Jan. 23. Later that day, the team sent a news release that confirmed Bryant's torn rotator cuff and specifically made mention of surgery as an option.

The news release also stated that Dr. Neal ElAttrache would examine Bryant on Monday. After Monday's meeting, Bryant decided that surgery would be required. ElAttrache previously performed Bryant's Achilles surgery and also operated on LA Dodgers pitcher Zack Greinke's broken collarbone. The world famous surgeon performed both those operations within 24 hours of one another. No surprise, ElAttrache performed Bryant's latest shoulder operation, along with Dr. Steve Lombardo.

Over the weekend, Bryant released a dramatic video that all but confirmed his season had ended and surgery was on the horizon. In a video clip for an upcoming documentary film which placed cameras in the room, Bryant underwent his initial examination with Lombardo. In the clip, Lombardo clearly announced that Bryant's muscle had detached from the bone. Although not explicitly stating that the Lakers' superstar required surgery, the video appeared to show Bryant coming to terms with the severity of his injury.

To ease Bryant's mind on missing the remainder of the season, the Lakers lost their ninth game in a row to the Washington Wizards on Tuesday. The defeat was the Lakers' 12th in the last 13 games, and LA's 34th defeat in 46 contests the season. Currently holding firm as the fourth worst team in the NBA, even a miracle would not save this team.

If the Lakers miraculously win every remaining game on their docket, they would finish with 48 wins. A season ago, the 2013-14 Dallas Mavericks finished with 49 wins and entered the playoffs with the eighth and final spot. Effectively, these Lakers have already been eliminated from the postseason.

For Bryant, the decision to get surgery should not have been difficult when considering the current standings and the nature of the injury. Ending the season rehabbing an injury should be an unwelcome familiar feeling, but Bryant's contract calls for only one more season. For Bryant's sake and for the sake of the fans, hopefully he can finish his Hall-of-Fame career on a healthy note.

At the moment, Bryant's involvement in training camp in Hawaii, which would be Bryant's last, remains unclear. According to the Lakers, Bryant will be out for approximately nine months and is expected to make a full recovery.

“I expect Kobe to make a full recovery and if all goes as expected, he should be ready for the start of the season,” ElAttrache said in the Lakers' official press release.
