Rookie From New Jersey Wins 2017 World Series of Poker

A recent Temple University graduate took his place atop the poker world early Sunday by winning the world's biggest poker tournament — and hauling in $8 million.

Scott Blumstein, a native of northern New Jersey who lives outside Atlantic City, took down the last two competitors at the final table of the 2017 World Series of Poker main event in Las Vegas. He held a commanding lead going into the final night of play that started Saturday evening, and was one of more than 7,000 that started the tournament.

The 25-year-old, who was described by Poker News as "an East Coast tournament grinder," entered the night with a commanding lead. A grinder is a player who spends a lot of time at the poker table and who considers poker a career.

The win "changes my life," he told ESPN, which broadcast the event.

"I'm really happy with how I played tonight," Blumstein said. "Really happy with the result, really happy with the deuce, because I was playing good, but I'm pretty tired of poker at this point, honestly. To have to go back and battle pretty deep-[stacked] again, I wasn't looking forward to it."

Entering Saturday, Blumstein had 226 million chips, compared to the second-place chip-holder Dan Ott's 88 million and Benjamin Pollack's 45 million.

Ott is also a Pennsylvanian who hails from Altoona. Pollack is a French poker professional.

Despite the win, Blumstein isn't getting overly confident just yet.

"If you had to ask me, probably the two guys I would least want to get three-handed with," Blumstein told ESPN. "But with that being said, I have a lot of chips and I'm confident we're going to go home, work on some three-handed poker, and come back ready to play tomorrow."

Blumstein graduated from Temple three years ago with a degree in accounting. According to his Twitter account, he's a "professional liver."

He'll likely be a professional poker player for the considerable future.

The $8.15 million isn't be his first big score in a poker tournament. He won nearly $200,000 in a tournament at the Borgata in Atlantic City last year.

Free: FLOOR Improv Day at Union Station

Trains, as a general, can't-deny-it rule, tend to go in pretty straight lines. It's longstanding tradition to build unwavy tracks that run directly into the distance, with maybe an interesting bend or loop here and there.

But the dancers soon to converge upon Union Station, our historic, Art-Deco-tastic, gem of a train station, will not honor this trainly way of doing things in terms of straight lines of movement.

There shall be leaps, and twists, and hip flicks, and a whole host of shimmying that goes down during The FLOOR Improv Day, an afternoon affair within the lofty-of-ceiling setting of the Alameda Street icon.

The Sunday, July 23 happening is totally free, so stop by, if you're looking for a lively but pay-nothing outing, to hear a host of ebullient tunes from The Red Line Horns, "LA's newest, baddest horn section" (think of the amazo acoustics produced by Union Station's big rooms).

A percussion session, helmed by Christian Moraga and sponsored by Latin Percussion, will keep the beats thrumming, too.

Joining the whole musical flow is the dance element of the day, with tango, and flamenco, both taking the floor, as well as the final "everyone joins to celebrate" moment of the day, THE FLOOR IMPROV Jam.

Can you imagine a visitor just disembarking from a train, a traveler ready to see Los Angeles for the first time, and what they'll come across? A throng of jubiliant people raising the roof, dance- and spirit-wise, in the middle of a train station?

Talk about a memorable welcome to our memorable city.

The hours are 2 to 5 p.m. on July 23, but, if you miss this one, take happy note: It somersaults back into Union Station on Sunday, Aug. 27.

A water main break caused street closures and flooding that reached all the way to the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles early Sunday morning.

A call came in around 3:30 a.m. of a 24-inch break that left streets between Hoover Street and Orchard Avenue closed, said Los Angeles Department of Water and Power spokesperson Terry Schneider.

By around 4:40 a.m., there was 3 feet of water backed up all the way to the 110 Freeway, said the Los Angeles Department of Transportation.

As of around 7 a.m., the streets between Hoover and Orchard were still closed, Schneider said. Crews were working to shut down the water main, but it was unknown if it was still flowing, Schneider said.

Pokémon Go Fest Attendees Refunded as Glitches Plague Event

Thousands of people descended on Chicago Saturday for Pokémon Go Fest – an event that was billed as a celebration of the smartphone game’s first year but instead became a debacle plagued by massive lines and connectivity issues.

Organized by the game’s developer, Niantic, the all-day festival in Grant Park was the company’s first official live event for players of the augmented reality game.

However, upon arrival, the roughly 20,000 attendees were met with hours-long lines to enter the festival, and then technical problems preventing play once inside the event.

Niantic’s chief marketing officer addressed the crowd to boos in the late morning, citing three specific problems that rendered attendees unable to access the game.

“One is a network issue. One of the providers is trying to pump in some more bandwidth so that’s something that we’re working with them closely on,” CMO Mike Quigley said onstage.

“The other two issues are on the Niantic side. There’s a crash bug issue that we’ve identified. I know some of you have had that issue, as well as an authentication issue, so we’ve got it completely pinpointed to those three things.”

Quigley said the company would offer players a refund on the $20 ticket price, as well as $100 in the game credit Pokecoins.

However, even with a refund, many attendees – some of whom traveled to Chicago from around the world – will only receive a fraction of what they actually paid.

Tickets to the festival, which promised rare Pokémon encounters, special challenges and exclusive rewards, sold out in just minutes last month.

Many were then listed for resale on sites like eBay for as high as $400.

Despite the connectivity issues, the festival was scheduled to continue as planned while the engineering team worked on a fix, Quigley said.

Authorities say five deputies are on paid leave and two investigations are under way following the killing of an inmate at a Southern California jail.

Sheriff's officials say Danny Pham died this month at Orange County's Central Jail Complex. The 27-year-old was serving 180 days for car theft.

The Orange County Register reports Pham was sharing a cell with an accused double-murderer.

The district attorney's office is conducting a homicide investigation. Meanwhile the sheriff's department is separately looking into whether deputies followed procedures.

The newspaper says investigators are looking into, among other things, suspicions that deputies did not check Pham's cell in a timely manner.

Both agencies declined comment on Friday.

Authorities have not released Pham's cause of death or said if his cellmate is a suspect.

Oakland Man Charged With Trying to Aid ISIS

A 22-year-old California man has been charged with attempting to support terrorism by allegedly using social media to promote the Islamic State group and offering to join the organization, according to court documents.

Federal prosecutors allege Amer Sinan Alhaggagi "went so far as to meet with undercover agents on multiple occasions to plan a potential terrorist attack," said a court filing unsealed Friday.

Alhaggagi, an Oakland, California, resident, has been in custody since November on unrelated identity-theft charges.

His defense lawyer told the San Francisco Chronicle that the latest allegations are baseless and stem from idle talk in late-night internet chat rooms.

"Amer is a very young and naive person, and it appears that he allowed himself to be drawn into conversations that he should have been far more suspicious of," attorney Mary McNamara said. She said Alhaggagi was unemployed at the time, had just turned 21, and "just got drawn into online communities" with other "young men staying up late at night."

The federal grand jury indictment charged Alhaggagi with attempting to provide material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization. The case has been assigned to a federal judge in Oakland. An arraignment has not yet been scheduled

Between July 24 and Nov. 29 of last year, the indictment said, Alhaggagi was "opening social media accounts understanding and intending that such accounts were to be used by, and for the benefit and promotion of, ISIS, and personnel, in the form of himself, to a foreign terrorist organization, namely ISIS," using the acronym for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

The terrorism charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The indictment did not give details of the social media accounts or specify how, or to whom, Alhaggagi offered "personnel, in the form of himself" to the terrorist organization.

Kershaw Exits With Injury, Dodgers Win in Extras

Kershaw Day? Try Sunday, bloody Sunday.

Logan Forsythe hit a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the 10th, and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Atlanta Braves, 5-4, in extra innings on a day overshadowed by Clayton Kershaw's injury.

Kershaw stopped the hearts of Dodgers fans across the globe when he bounced a curveball in the dirt in the second inning and immediately reached for his lower back.

"I felt something different," Kershaw said of the pain he felt in his back. "I'm not optimistic. Hopefully we'll find out more tonight."

After he threw the pitch, it appeared as if Kerhsaw may have pulled something in his back. Trainers immediately came out to the mound, but Kershaw stayed in the game, walking Tyler Flowers and striking out Matt Adams to end the inning.

"They asked me if I was hurting. I said 'yes,' that was the extent of it," Kershaw said of the conversation on the mound. "I kinda knew at that point I was probably coming out. Sitting down and getting cold and going back out wasn't going to be a good thing."

However, after the inning, Kershaw immediately left the dugout and did not return to the game as the Dodgers announced later that he left with "lower back tightness."

"We took him out as a precaution," said Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts after the game. "We won't know more until we get the scans, but we're holding out hope."

That's cause for concern for the Dodgers and their fans as their record breaking season just flashed before their very eyes.

Kershaw missed 10 weeks of the 2016 season with a herniated disk in his back, and never underwent surgery to repair it.

"I don't want to compare the injuries because there's so many variables," said Kershaw. "I honestly don't even know how to compare it."

If the injury is related to the herniated disk, and Kershaw is forced to miss the same amount of time he did last season, then he would miss the remainder of the regular season.

"There's a lot of frustration," a visibly disappointed Kershaw said following the game. "I've done countless hours of back maintenance and rehab to try and stay healthy, so there's definitely a lot of frustration for sure."

For now, Los Angeles is forced to hold its collective breath as they are cautiously optimistic that the injury isn't serious, but after the game Dodgers' manager Dave Roberts confirmed that Kershaw would head to the 10-day disabled list and undergo further testing on Sunday night.

"It is a DL situation," Roberts confirmed. "We know the standings, we know where we're at, but we need to gather more information. How he feels, with the reports we get, then we'll make a further decision."

Despite Kershaw's absence, the walk-off victory gave the Dodgers their 15th consecutive victory when Kershaw starts the game.

After an RBI double by Brandon Phillips gave the Braves the lead in the top of the third inning, Dodgers' catcher Austin Barnes followed with a three-run bomb in the bottom of the fourth that put the Boys in Blue in front, 3-1.

"He has a really good fastball and it was really jumping today," Barnes said of the pitch from Braves' starter Sean Newcomb that he ultimately wrapped around the foul pole for a home run. "I was able to get a hold of one."

Bellinger added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when he belted his NL-leading 27th home run of the season.

"It was a 3-0 count, so I looked over at Doc and he gave me the green light," Bellinger said of the homer. "I had a good feeling a fastball was coming and he threw it where I could hit."

Bellinger's home run turned out to be vital as closer Kenley Jansen blew his first save of the season when he allowed a three-run home run on the final strike of the game to Matt Adams.

"At the time I was thinking it was just an extra run," Bellinger said of his insurance run before the bottom of the ninth. "You don't usually see that out of Kenley, but it's all good."

Jansen was indifferent after the game. Feeling "sick to his stomach," after the loss of Kershaw, but happy the team won the game.

"It was a good at-bat by Adams," Jansen said. "He fought it off and he's got power so it ended up over the fence. You can't second guess yourself. My teammates picked me up today."

Prior to the bomb by Adams, Jansen had converted 34 consecutive saves, and had not blown a game since August 26, 2016.

Brandon Morrow got the win with a scoreless 10th inning, and the Dodgers got the game-winning rally started in the bottom of the frame with a leadoff single by Chris Taylor.

Corey Seager took Taylor's place after a fielder's choice groundout, and advance to third on a hit-and-run play with Justin Turner at the plate.

"It was a 3-2 hit and run," said Seager. "It worked out really well. Got into first and third and it ended up paying off."

One batter later, Forsythe won it for the Dodgers witn an RBI single up the middle with the Atlanta infield in. It was LA's seventh walk-off victory this season.

"Off a guy like Johnson, he's got a really good sinker and you have to see him on the plate," Forsythe said of his game-winning at-bat against Atlanta closer, and former Dodger Jim Johnson. "I got one to do it with, and luckily enough I got inside of it and hit to the right part of the field."

The Dodgers extended their MLB record to 46 consecutive wins when taking the lead at any point in the game, and are an MLB-best 21-8 during day games this year.

The victory moves the Dodgers 2.5 games ahead of the Houston Astros for the best record in baseball as LA improved to 41-13 at home this season.

With just 27 games left at Dodger Stadium, the Blue Crew guaranteed themselves a winning record at the Ravine in 2017.

USC Doctor Studies Depression, Disability in Aging Latinos

University of Southern California associate professor Dr. Maria Aranda never left the east side of Los Angeles, a community where she was born and raised and where she's now doing research aimed at helping an older generation of Latinos.

"I see the immense need in our community," Aranda said.

Older Latinos suffer higher rates of severe depression and disability and are less likely to get quality treatment, she said.

That's why USC's School of Social Work started Programa Esperanza, or Project Hope, which works with patients at the Alta Med clinic in Boyle Heights.

"They meet one-on-one with their interventionist and they talk about their problems, but more importantly, they develop what we call an action plan," Aranda explained.

Project Hope participant Fidencia Aguilera said her counselor told her to focus on things she likes to do. So the 79 year old focuses on crafts, singing and dancing.

Cristina Cuello, 81, said being a part of the depression study has helped her. as well. "I feel at Alta Med like a waterfall of love," Cuello said.

Aranda said that people doubted their ability to do a study that required older Latinos to open up and talk about their feelings.

"We've proved those naysayers wrong," she said.

She believes the study works because the counseling is culturally aware, offered in Spanish and comes with a deep connection to this generation.

Aranda plans to share the findings so that low-income, limited-English speaking older adults can be helped across the country.

"Since a very young age, I've been interested in working with older adults," Aranda said. "It could be because my grandmother lived with us in my initial formative years, so I understood what it is to be around older people."

Drawing upon lessons she learned as a child, Dr. Aranda continues to discover better ways to treat aging adults in a community with which she has a lifelong connection.

A 16-year-old girl was arrested Sunday for the murder of a 79-year-old Apple Valley man, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced.

Willie Hunter, 79, was found dead inside his apartment on the 12700 block of Kiowa Road shortly before 4 p.m.

Sheriff’s officials believed the man was the victim of a homicide. After a lengthy investigation, homicide investigators determined that Hunter and the teen knew each other. The nature of their relationship is unclear.

The suspect was at Hunter’s apartment and an altercation occurred. She stabbed the Hunter multiple times before leaving the apartment and taking his car, sheriff’s officials said.

The teen was booked at juvenile hall for murder early Sunday morning.

Jamaica Stuns Mexico 1-0 in Pasadena

PASADENA--Forty-two thousand, three hundred and ninety-three fans turned up at the Rose Bowl on Sunday to watch Mexico take on Jamaica in the Gold Cup semifinal, and the vast majority of those fans left the stadium disappointed.

Jamaica's Kemar Lawrence stepped up in the 88th minute to knock in a free kick goal from just outside Mexico's penalty area, and Mexico goal keeper Jesus Corona simply did not react in time to stop the well-placed shot.

Jamaica won 1-0 in front of a crowd that was soaked in the green, red and white colors of the nation that shares a border with the United States. When the Mexican team left the pitch, it heard a chorus of jeers from the fans that had stuck around past the final whistle.

With the victory, Jamaica now advances and faces the United States on Wednesday in Santa Clara on Wednesday.

On the day, Jamaica's goal keeper Andre Blake probably deserved the most credit for the result, as Mexico's seven shots on target all failed to beat the living wall that was Blake. Lawrence may have hit the match winning goal, but Blake kept Jamaica in the match after Mexico had dominated possession 64 percent to 36 percent.

Of course, Mexico falling short of Wednesday's final means that the dream CONCACAF USA versus Mexico final is not to be. However, the reggae boys of Jamaica provide the U.S. Mens' National Team with a far greater threat on the break with their pace. Add in that Jamaica nearly scored off a free kick earlier in the match, and the United States could be Jamaica's next victim if Bruce Arena's men come in not ready to play.

Ultimately, though, the United States should be heavily favored to win Wednesday's final considering the match is on U.S. soil and Jamaica is not considered one of the confederation's heavy weights.

All that said, Sunday night's 1-0 result in Pasadena was well deserved by the Jamaicans.

World's Oldest-Known Manatee Dies in 'Heartbreaking Accident'

Snooty, the world’s oldest known manatee, died Saturday in what the South Florida Museum called a "heartbreaking accident," just one day after celebrating his 69th birthday.

The museum in Bradenton made the announcement Sunday afternoon in a statement on its website and in social media postings.

“Our initial findings indicate that Snooty’s death was a heartbreaking accident and we’re all quite devastated about his passing,” museum CEO Brynne Anne Besio said in the statement.

Besio added that the museum staff members "deeply mourn his passing."

Early indications show that an underwater door leading to a plumbing area, which is normally bolted shut, had been dislodged. Snooty was able to swim in but was not able to get out.

The animal was no longer alive when workers got to him. Three other, smaller manatees that also swam in were able to swim out.

Officials are investigating the exact circumstances of Snooty's death and how the door opened. The museum's aquarium remained closed on Sunday.

A necropsy, or an animal autopsy, will be performed at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Marine Mammal Pathobiology Laboratory in St. Petersburg.

Snooty, according to the museum, was born July 21, 1948, and was the first manatee born in captivity. He became the mascot of Florida's Manatee County in 1979 and welcomed more than a million visitors in his lifetime.

Snooty also participated in scientific research programs that studied manatee biology and behavior.

But Kushner's participation in a meeting last year with Donald Trump Jr. and a Kremlin-linked lawyer is likely to be on the table for questioning.

The committee is investigating Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election. U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Moscow's covert operation was intended to damage Hillary Clinton's campaign and evolved into an attempt to help Trump win.

Newly-hired White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci said Sunday that President Donald Trump is "thinking about pardoning nobody" in connection with the Russia investigation, according to NBC News.

"The truth of the matter is that the president is not going to have to pardon anybody because the Russia thing is a nonsensical thing," Scarmucci said on CNN’s "State of the Union." However, on "Fox News Sunday," the communications director acknowledged that he and the president discussed pardons "last week."

Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow also told ABC's "This Week" that the president's legal team has not been researching the power to pardon. A Washington Post report last week had claimed that Trump asked his advisers about his power to pardon family members, aides and even himself.

On Saturday, Trump tweeted about his power to pardon, saying, "While all agree the U.S. President has the complete power to pardon, why think of that when only crime so far is LEAKS against us.FAKE NEWS."
