Suspect in Deadly Street Race Surrenders

A man suspected of being behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang that crashed during a street race in Chatsworth, killing two spectators, surrendered to police Saturday night, officials said.

Henry Michael Gevorgyan, 21, turned himself in at the LAPD Central Division station, tweeted Capt. John McMahon of the San Fernando Valley Traffic Division.

The incident happened about 2 a.m. Thursday on a stretch of Plummer Street that goes through a light industrial neighborhood.

Investigators believe Gevorgyan's Mustang barreled into several spectators on a sidewalk after jumping a curb. The driver fled the scene after the crash.

Gevorgyan could face charges of hit and run, vehicular manslaughter and possibly murder, McMahon said.

The driver of the second vehicle involved in the race, who has yet to be identified, could also be charged.

It was apparent from the rubber burnout marks on the roadway that the Mustang began going out of control shortly after it started accelerating, police said. The tire marks on the roadway were from acceleration, not braking, said LAPD Detective Bill Bustos.

One spectator died at the scene. Two others were taken to the hospital, where one was declared dead and the other was in critical condition.

Chance of T-Storms in Rainy, Snowy Winter Storm

This weekend will be mostly overcast and rainy as the bulk of a storm was expected to move in from the Pacific Northwest Saturday and stick around Southern California through Monday.

Showers - and snow above 6,000 feet in elevation - were expected to increase in the mountains, with the snow level dropping to between 3,500 and 4,000 feet late Saturday night.

Heavy rain was expected overnight. Up to half an inch of rain could fall in scattered showers expected across the Southland, according to forecasts, but much of the accumulation expected to come Saturday will be in the mountains, NBC4 meterologist Shanna Mendiola said.

"Your weekend storm is looking a little bit heavy in the way of snow," Mendiola said. "Periods of rain definitely for everyone else in the LA Basin, the IE and the OC."

Showers were in the forecast for Saturday, baffling those along the coast where nary a cloud was visible, but stormy weather arrived in the mountains and promised to make Sunday and Monday generally wet and cold.

Glendora was prepared for rain-triggered mudslides, as its Colby burn area was under a yellow alert and city crews set up protective barriers and sandbags. The exposed hillsides left by fires are vulnerable to heavy rain, and homes and infrastructure were damaged by recent rain-triggered mudslides in Malibu, Camarillo Springs and Glendora.

"Some of these people everything they own, everything they have, could be ogne in a matter of a few minutes. That's how fast it could happen," said Sheldon Grant, a former Glendora resident.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the 60s at lower altitudes, according to NBC4's futurecast, while isolated thunderstorms are possible through the weekend, starting Saturday night.

A 48-hour storm warning was set to go into effect at 4 p.m. Saturday for elevations above 5,000 feet in Riverside County mountains, where vehicles will be required to carry snow chains. A winter weather advisory was in place for some of Los Angeles's mountains.

Between 8 and 12 inches of snow should fall on mountains above 7,000 feet, dropping down less than 4 inches between 4,000 and 5,000 feet, Mendiola said.

Drizzle fell in Glendora Friday night, but more rain was expected over the weekend. Snow briefly fell Saturday afternoon in Big Bear.

A fire broke out at Disneyland in Anaheim on Saturday night, but was quickly extinguished, a spokeswoman for the theme park said.

The flames were reported about 9:20 p.m. in a back stage area near the It’s a Small World attraction, said the spokeswoman, Suzi Brown. The fire was not inside the building.

The small blaze was possibly sparked by a fireworks show that usually takes place at 9:25 p.m., she said. The show may have started earlier due to the possibility of rain.

No one was hurt, Brown said.

Anaheim and Disneyland fire personnel responded to the fire.

Posts on social media, including Instagram and Twitter, showed flames near the attraction.

The theme parked hoped to reopen It's a Small World late Saturday night. Disneyland was scheduled to remain open until midnight.

Navy Settles Dispute Over Native American Remains

The Navy is turning over hundreds of human remains to a California Indian tribe after determining that the band has a historical connection to one of the Channel Islands.

A report this week in the Federal Register said Navy officials have recognized that the Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians has a connection to the history of the island.

The designation means that the remains of 469 people and 436 burial objects that were removed from San Nicolas Island over the last century will be repatriated to the tribe in Temecula, a suburb 75 miles southeast of Los Angeles, according to the report.

The Ventura County Star reports the decision came after more than two years of talks between Navy officials and tribal officials over the Navy-owned island, which is 65 miles off the coast.

"What (this) decision means is that nearly 500 human remains, and hundreds of burial and sacred items will finally be afforded the respect and dignity they have long deserved under federal law," said Pechanga Tribal Chairman Mark Macarro, in a statement released Friday.

The artifacts have been moving around museums throughout the state.

Hailstorm Rolls Through South Bay

There was certainly some strange weather in the Bay Area Saturday.

Parts of the South Bay turned into a winter wonderland as a slow-moving storm dumped hail on San Jose hillsides, making it look almost Sierra-like.

The Peninsula also got a surprising dose of rain in some areas.

The storm dropped pea-sized hail, which was moving across the hills at a very slow 5-10 mph allowing the hail to accumulate rapidly in the South Bay, according to NBC Bay Area Meteorologist Rob Mayeda.

"Enough of it fell clearly to cover hillsides with what looked like snow from far away and made driving on roads coated in hail pretty tough for a short time," Mayeda said.

What was also unusual was how long the storm lasted while moving slowly to the southwest, according to Mayeda.

The National Weather Service confirmed that although it looked like snow was falling in the Bay Area, it was indeed hail.

Many took to social media thinking what they saw was snow, baffled by the white they saw up in the hills of San Jose covering roads, car windshields and lawns.

"There was lots of lightining and thunder and then it started to rain where we are and then we just saw this one hill covered in snow," said Ellis Cerda of San Jose.

A 40-year-old woman was airlifted to the hospital after suffering serious injuries from a dog attack Sunday morning in Pinole, California, according to fire officials.

Officials with the Pinole Fire Department said emergency medical crews responded to a report of a dog attack on Silverado Drive around 10 a.m.

Arriving crews found a 40-year-old woman with serious injuries and requested a medical helicopter, while paramedics began advanced life support treatment, officials said.

The woman suffered injuries to her face, arms and legs. She was transported to the John Muir Medical Center's trauma center in Walnut Creek, according to fire officials.

Pinole fire Battalion Chief Steve Akre said the woman was attacked inside her house by the family dog — a male pit bull — who lives in the home,  he said.

Akre said he didn't know whether the dog belonged to the woman or to a man who also lives in the house, but neighbors said the pit bull was owned by the woman.

A second ambulance was requested to evaluate the man, but Akre said he was not injured in the attack.

Akre said he didn't know the details of how the dog came to attack the woman.

As of around 5:30 p.m., Akre said he had not yet been updated on her condition and described her injuries as "significant."

"Any time you transport someone to a trauma center via a medical helicopter, it's a very serious incident," Akre said.

Police and animal services were called to the scene, Akre said.

A boy remains in critical condition Sunday, a day after he was struck by a driver in a hit-and-run collision in Santa Ana, authorities said.

Police found the boy lying in the northbound lanes of Fairview Street, just south of Civic Center Drive, at about 8:09 a.m. on Saturday, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.

Witnesses described the vehicle as small and black, police said. The driver failed to stop and help the boy, fleeing the scene.

The boy was treated by paramedics before being taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

A black BMW 300 series made between 2001 and 2006 car may have been involved in the collision, police said, based on evidence discovered at the scene.

Officers are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has additional information about the BMW and driver to call 714-245-8214.

A man died in an attempted carjacking at a gas station in San Bernardino on Sunday, police said.

Police were searching for two attempted thieves believed to have been involved in the moments leading up to the man's death, according to officers with the San Bernardino Police Department said.

The carjacking was reported about 11:37 a.m. at an Arco gas station near the intersection of Highland Avenue and Sierra Way, police said.

While the man's cause of the death was under investigation, police said he may have driven his car in reverse and hit his head on a post while he was partially outside of the car.

Police set up a search area around the gas station, but hadn't found the two men suspected of trying to steal the four-door Honda.

A woman who was with the victim was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Lakers Stormed by Thunder

The Los Angeles Lakere came into Sunday's contest against the Oklahoma City Thunder with the possibility of extending their three-game winning streak to a season-high of four games. Even without Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant available due to injuries, the Thunder had no interest in rolling over for the Lakers.

D.J. Augustin led the Thunder with 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists to give the Thunder a slight cushion in the race for the playoffs. Westbrook underwent facial surgery after taking a blow to the face in Oklahoma City's loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday.

With the stars out for the visitors, Serge Ibaka, Enes Kanter, Nick Collison and the Thunder's supporting cast stepped forward and took care of the lackluster Lakers.

To be fair to the Lakers, they were without Kobe Bryant, Nick Young, Ronnie Price, Julius Randle and Steve Nash for Sunday's game. Young is the only player on the aforementioned list expected to return this season, as the Lakers' sixth man is suffering with a sore left knee.

When searching for positives in the loss, the Lakers did manage to continue sharing the ball. Jeremy Lin, in particular, continued his strong play following the All-Star break. Lin would finish as the Lakers' leading scorer and leading assist man with 20 points and eight assists to go along with six rebounds.

Starting shooting guard Wayne Ellington also continued his strong play by stepping up to help a short-handed and inexperienced backcourt. Ellington finished with 12 points, six assists and six rebounds to lead the starting unit.

As a team, however, the Lakers never found their groove on Sunday and never led in the contest. Although the Thunder did not gain true separation until the fourth quarter, the Lakers did not threaten the Thunder for the entire second half.

When the final buzzer sounded, the scoreboard read "Lakers 101, Thunder 108."

Next, the Lakers take an early Monday morning flight to Charlotte to play the Charlotte Hornets on Tuesday night.

4-Alarm Restaurant Fire Near OC University

A four-alarm blaze burned through a restaurant for about two hours near a Cal State Fullerton in Orange County on Sunday morning, fire officials said.

More than 80 firefighters battled the blaze, reported at 5:55 a.m. at the single-story business in the 2700 block of East Nutwood Avenue, according to Fullerton Fire Department officials.

No injuries were reported, officials said. Street closures were slated to persist through the afternoon.

The restaurant is Dillon's Bar & Grill, formerly a popular bar called Cantina Lounge, which sits across the street from the college campus and next to the 57 Freeway, fire officials said.

"Thank God nobody was in there," said Dillon’s owner, Abbey Shilleh.

After hearing about the fire, employee Sam Cole rushed back to the restaurant after closing the bar hours earlier.

"I just couldn’t believe it," Cole said.

It was in imminent danger of collapse, and firefighters were in defensive mode before they finally brought the fire under control at 9 a.m.

Firefighters thought the flames were doused at 6:11 a.m., but when more flames were spotted they called a fourth alarm and continued to battle the fire, officials said.

Although the building is considered a total loss, the owner said it would be rebuilt.

Mudslide Closes PCH in Ventura County

$

CORRECTION: This article incorrectly described where and when Sunday’s closure took place, along with the location of the stretch of PCH reopened Friday.

A mudslide shut down both lanes of Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura County for at least a day, officials said.

Rocks and other debris covered the road near Point Mugu about 4:30 a.m. Sunday -- part of the same nine-mile stretch of road that was closed by another mudslide in November, Caltrans and California Highway Patrol officials said.

Crews were cleaning up the mud, but it was expected to remain closed into Monday morning, according to Caltrans.

"Weather is going to play a factor. Obviously, we don’t want people driving through the mud and slush here," Caltrans spokesperson Patrick Chandler said.

Although crews cleared the aftermath of the mudslide by Sunday evening, rainfall near the area prevented Caltrans' scheduled road reopening.

The rainfall, combined with a flash flood warning in effect for Ventura County, prevented the reopening. Caltrans crews planned to monitor the area throughout the night.

It was the only damage reported so far from a winter storm that moved into Southern California on Friday. It had some weather-worn and burn-area communities vulnerable to dangerous mudslides hunkered down, but besides PCH, no other major damage was immediately reported.

More rain and snow was in the forecast Sunday as a cold storm stays in Southern California through Monday. It brings the possibility of isolated thunderstorms but, for most areas, just scattered rain showers, according to the National Weather Service.

Up to a foot of snow is possible at high elevations in Southern California mountains on Sunday, and thunderstorms, thundersnow and hail storms are possible, the NWS warned.

PCH is closed from Calleguas Creek Road to Deer Creek Road, according to a Caltrans spokewsoman. A stretch south of this stretch of PCH had only completely reopened to the public Friday, following repairs from another mudslide caused by a storm in late November.

Caltrans crews were cleaning the road Sunday morning, and a Caltrans officer estimated it would reopen Monday morning, depending on rain.

Storm cells massed over the inland mountains of Southern California on Saturday, briefly drenching communities like Montecito and Camarillo Springs overnight, according to the NWS, which reported thunderstorms as well.

A flash flood warning was put in place early Sunday for a burn area in Camarillo Springs that was hit by a mudslide in a storm in late fall, but it was cancelled after less than an hour.

But in Glendora Sunday, sandbags and barriers remained in place after stop-and-go rain, in case a brief downpour spurs a mudslide.

Some areas received precipitation over half an inch through 4 a.m. on Sunday, according to the NWS, including Northridge, the Oxnard Civic Center and San Gabriel Dam.

Downtown Los Angeles only felt about 0.1 inches, while rain missed other areas, including Los Angeles International Airport and Long Beach Airport.

Higher up in the mountains, the precipitation turned to snow, and while drivers had to put tire chains on their cars, many still took to the snowy slopes for skiing and snowboarding.

The snow means big business for resorts like Big Bear Mountain Resort, which general manager Brent Tregaskis said already had a big base of man-made snow.

"We'll be fine all the way through Easter weekend," Tregaskis said.

Escaped Inmate Found Hiding in Hot Tub

An inmate who escaped into a Southern California neighborhood was found hiding in a hot tub and taken into custody, officials said.

The inmate, identified as Arturo Valenzuela, was working in a rear parking lot at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lomita Station when he jumped a fence and took off, Deputy Mike Barraza said. He was reported missing about 2:40 p.m.

Deputies, backed by units from the Sheriff’s Carson Station, a helicopter and K-9, set up a perimeter in search of Valenzuela, who was wearing a yellow jumpsuit.

Officials confirmed that he was found about 5 p.m. hiding out in a covered hot tub in a nearby backyard in the 25900 block of Cypress Street. The hot tub had a little bit of water in the bottom, deputies said.

Valenzuela was taken to the hospital to be treated for an ankle injury that he suffered during the incident, officials said.

He was booked for escape and being held on $100,000 bail. He had originally been jailed for burglary.

Valenzuela was working at the station under minimum security as part of a program that employs inmates who meet certain criteria, deputies said.

Storm Brings Heavy Downpours, Hail, Snow to SoCal

A day of blustery and spotty weather - with some areas sunny and others soaked - ended with strong thunderstorms bearing down on parts of Southern California.

A cold, low-pressure system was expected to move southeast over Southern California through Monday, the National Weather Service said.

Heavy rain, hail, lightning and gusty winds were expected overnight.

A flash flood warning was issued for central Ventura County on Sunday afternoon as two separate, strong thunderstorms developed over the region, the NWS said. The warning expired at 7:30 p.m. Locations in the warning included Camarillo, Santa Rosa Valley, Moorpark and Somis.

The heaviest rain was in Ventura County, just west of the LA County line, the NWS said. A "heavy downpour" was spotted just north of the 101 Freeway near Camarillo, and heavy rain was falling on state Route 118 west of Moorpark.

“It’s been crazy, we’ve seen a lot of lightning strikes,” said Sherman Oaks resident Jordan Orenge. “I’d appreciate a little less rain more often than all the rain at once. It was like a shower just unloaded on us today.”

Scattered showers had been forecasted throughout the weekend as a winter storm stuck around in Southern California, but little sustained rain had fallen outside of the mountains and foothills until about 2 p.m. Sunday, when the storms developed.

"A moist and unstable air mass in place from a cold upper low pressure system will bring showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms to the area through Monday,'' the NWS said in a statement released at 2:09 p.m.

"A weaker storm system will follow on its heels later Monday, allowing for lingering showers into early Tuesday," the NWS said.

Hail was reported in some areas, including by NBC4 meteorologist Crystal Egger. Rain and thunder were also reported.

The storm between Ventura and Ojai would bring heavy rains, while the one over Santa Monica was expected to briefly bring heavy rain, the NWS said.

2 Arrested in WH Security Breaches

Two people have been arrested in two separate White House security breaches in less than 24 hours, NBC News reported.

Someone tried to walk through a gate while someone else was exiting Monday morning. No further details were immediately available.

The arrest came just hours after a previous incident Sunday night. In that case, someone stepped over a bike rack that has been positioned outside the perimeter of the White House fence.

The bike racks were placed there following a fence-jumping incident last year that, along with several other cases, led to the resignation of then-Secret Service director Julia Pierson.

The agency is investigating both cases.

Joseph Clancy was appointed as the new Secret Service director by President Barack Obama last month.
