This Thanksgiving, Chargers Thankful for Win Against Cowboys

Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry individually had outstanding games, leading the Los Angeles Chargers to a 28-6 victory over the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday afternoon.

Allen finished with 11 receptions for 172 yards and one touchdown on the day.

"We had a great play call. I had a corner route," Allen explained about 42-yard touchdown catch and run. "The two men, they're playing inside and I'm outside. Obviously, that's a good play. Philip [Rivers] threw a great ball. After that, gotta make them miss and get into the end zone. I just know the safety was coming. Once I felt the safety, I broke out I had to get up field really fast. It was a matter of making those guys miss."

Desmond King intercepted a pass intended for Cole Beasley, and ran it back for 90 yard touchdown that sealed the deal in front of 93,015 fans at AT&T Stadium.

The Chargers (5-6) came off an impressive 54-24 win over the Buffalo Bills last Sunday at Stub Hub Center. On a short week, the Chargers traveled to AT&T Stadium and faced the Cowboys (5-6), a team that has struggled offensively without suspended running back Ezekiel Elliott. Alfred Morris is the Cowboys' primary running back, and averaged 6.2 yards per carry on the year. Morris had 17 carries a week ago for 91 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles.

At one point in the season the Chargers had the second-worst run defense in the league. That stat was before the return of Denzel Perryman, who debuted in Jacksonville against the Jaguars with 8 tackles.

After a solid opening debut for the Chargers defense, quarterback Philip Rivers kept the opening drive alive with a 46-yard pass to Travis Benjamin for a crucial 1st down. Unable to continue the drive in the end zone, Chargers kicker Nick Novak missed a 35-yard field goal attempt.

Later in the opening quarter, Rivers found Keenan Allen for two bail-out catches, along with Hunter Henry's dynamic catch that kept the drive alive. With Novak out for two series due to a back injury, Los Angeles was unable to convert in the red zone on fourth down.

Outstanding defense by the Bolts allowed the offense to have one more chance before halftime to put points on the board. Rivers, in a series of passes to Allen and Henry, allowed them into the red zone for the third time, which proved to be the charm. The Bolts settled for a 22-yard field goal by Novak for the 3-0 lead late in the second quarter.

The first half was filled with penalties from both the Cowboys and Chargers and a highly contested defensive battle between both teams. Prescott was sacked twice and never got the Cowboys past midfield.

It was the first time the Cowboys have been shut out in the first half in five seasons.

Rivers found Austin Ekeler for a 38-yard catch that set off the drive. Two plays later Rivers found Allen on a skinny post route for the hard-fought first down. Eventually Rivers found Henry in the back of the end zone for the 3-yard touchdown pass and the 9-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

It was Henry's first touchdown since Oct. 8, as Los Angeles is 4-1 this season when Henry gets at least five targets, and 0-5 when he doesn't.

Dak Prescott ran for a touchdown, but it was called back due to a holding penalty by left tackle Tyron Smith. The Bolts defense buckled down and forced Dallas to punt on that drive.

Late in the third quarter, Rivers with great field vision found a sprinting Tyrell Williams for a 27 yard touchdown.

The Cowboys offense looked putrid for three quarters, as the Chargers defense continued to break their spirits. The only bright spot for the Cowboys was a 2-yard touchdown run up the middle by Rod Smith. However, they failed to score on the two-point conversion where Dallas still trailed 16-6 early in the final quarter.

The Cowboys (0-2) are one of three teams (excluding the Chargers) never to beat Philip Rivers, along with the 49ers & Giants (each 0-3).

Philip Rivers completed 27 of 33 passes for 434 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Hunter Henry finished with five receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.

Hunter Henry finished with five receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown.

"We want Hunter involved every week like that," Rivers said. "It just didn't happen on a consistent basis. He was big today, especially early. Everybody contributed. It was a team effort. It's exciting."

Dak Prescott completed 20 of 27 passes for 179 yards and two interceptions in the loss. Morris finished with 9 carries for 36 yards.

The Chargers return home to face the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 3 at Stub Hub Center.

North Korean Defector Recovering From Wounds: Surgeon

North Korea's latest defector, a young soldier known only by his family name Oh, is a quiet, pleasant man who has nightmares about being returned to the North, his surgeon said on Thursday, Reuters reported.

"He's a pretty nice guy," said lead surgeon John Cook-Jong Lee, who has been operating and caring for the 24-year-old. Oh has become a focus of worldwide attention after he was badly wounded by fellow North Korean soldiers as he scrambled across the border in the Demilitarized Zone that separates North and South on Nov. 13.

Video of Oh's escape released on Wednesday showed him stumbling over the border and being dragged unconscious through the undergrowth by South Korean troops.

Lee has been almost the only person to speak with Oh since he arrived at the hospital, he told Reuters in an interview at his office at Ajou University Hospital, just a few floors away from where the defector lies guarded by South Korean special forces and intelligence officers.

Roggin's Heroes Thanksgiving 2017

They’re the best of the best. Roggin’s Heroes Thanksgiving is back to count the many blessings of Southern California’s top high school football stars.

For the first time, one of our alumni has reached the NFL, making it even more realistic that a future pro could be sitting at this year’s table.

One of our top recruits is San Clemente’s Jack Shippy. He’s a model athlete and a model student. And he just happens to be … a model.

It’s an unusual occupation for a high schooler. It’s even more unusual when you hear how he landed the job.

Some of these players are former teammates. Some are enemies on the field, even bringing their trash talk to the table.

One has been an actor in commercials, another’s dad is a former star for the LA Rams.

Our group forms a unique football family, gathering for a festive feast at the Four Seasons Westlake Village.

They come from diverse backgrounds but they’re all in search of stardom.

That’s something Olaijah Griffin has dealt with his whole life since his dad, Warren G, is a multiplatinum rapper. Olaijah has certainly emerged from his father’s shadow, growing into one of the top prep prospects in the country.

Admittedly, these young men have plenty to learn. Parents have helped prepare them for the next level where coaches will continue to guide their steps.

But it always helps to have mentors along the way. And tonight, we’ve brought a friend to dinner to share some words of wisdom they’ll remember for a lifetime.

He’s one of the newest inductees into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Chargers legend LaDainian Tomlinson shared his knowledge in hopes of helping these high school stars succeed in college and beyond.

They have plenty to be thankful for on Thanksgiving. And you’ll be grateful after settling in for this second helping of Roggin’s Heroes Thanksgiving.

Decades Later, Wrongfully Convicted Man Tastes Freedom

Simi Valley was a sleepy Southern California suburb in 1979, one frequently ranked near the top of surveys of America's safest cities -- in large part because hundreds of police officers from nearby Los Angeles lived there.

The city, however, was shaken when residents awoke on Nov. 11, 1978, to learn of the slaying of a 24-year-old woman and her 4-year-old son. Rhonda Wicht had been strangled and her son, Donald, smothered in his bed.

Wicht's former boyfriend, Craig Richard Coley, was arrested on the same day police found the bodies and eventually convicted.

For the next 39 years he steadfastly maintained that he had never killed anyone. Earlier this week, the police chief and district attorney indicated they believed him. On Wednesday he was pardoned by Gov. Jerry Brown.

Coley, now 70, walked out of a high desert prison just hours before Thanksgiving, becoming the latest of numerous prisoners to be freed after advanced forensic technology that analyzes DNA showed they either didn't commit the crime or someone else did.

"When I was arrested, I told them, 'You can do whatever you want to me, but don't stop looking for the person that did this, because you have the wrong man," Coley said.

In an application for clemency that Coley himself filed from prison four years ago, he said a former police detective had framed him by destroying crucial evidence.

"The crimes were not committed by me and had the detective not destroyed the exonerating evidence (including semen and hair), the real suspect(s) could have been apprehended," Coley said. He named a retired Simi Valley police detective he said could corroborate his story.

On Monday, Simi Valley Police Chief David Livingstone and Ventura County District Attorney Gregory Totten told reporters they had begun reviewing Coley's case last year after a retired detective expressed concerns about the conviction.

"As district attorney, I must tell you I look forward to the day when I can shake Mr. Coley's hand, apologize to him for the injustice he suffered," Totten said.

The trial judge had ordered evidence destroyed after Coley exhausted his appeals, but investigators retrieved records from Coley's relatives and located biological samples at a private lab.

Using advanced techniques not available at the time of his trial, technicians didn't find Coley's DNA on a key piece of evidence used to convict him. Instead they found DNA from other people, whom authorities have not publicly named. The evidence was not identified.

"I am also hopeful," Totten said, "that one day soon we will bring to justice the violent man responsible for this most horrific crime."

Coley's arrest was a media sensation in Simi Valley in 1978, when the population of 75,000 was half what it is now. Some public officials complained at the time that newspapers seemed to be attempting to exonerate him in stories that suggested someone else might be involved.

The 24-year-old restaurant manager and son of a retired police officer had never been in trouble. But authorities maintained Coley was angry and despondent after learning Wicht was breaking up with him.

She was strangled, apparently with a macrame rope, and her son was suffocated. Their bodies were found in their apartment.

Coley's first trial resulted in a hung jury, with jurors split 10-2 in favor of conviction. He was tried again in 1980, found guilty and sentenced to life without parole.

During his decades in prison Coley was cited as a model inmate, avoiding gangs and violence and embracing religion.

"The grace with which Mr. Coley has endured this lengthy and unjust incarceration is extraordinary," Brown wrote in his pardon.

The governor said he asked the state parole board more than two years ago to look into Coley's conviction. He said former law-enforcement officials believed Coley was either wrongfully convicted or framed.

"This case is tragic," Livingstone and Totten said in a news release. "An innocent woman and small child were murdered. Craig Coley has spent 39 years in custody for a crime he likely did not commit."

The burned body of a person believed to be a young man was found on top of a SEPTA Regional Rail train when it pulled into Philadelphia's Center City station during the Friday morning rush hour.

The remains were burned beyond recognition, making it impossible for police to immediately identify the person killed, Philadelphia police said.

The "charred body," as police described it, was found about 7:30 a.m. at Jefferson Station, with the person's legs dangling off the side of the top of the train.

Investigators do believe the person was 16 to 20 years old.

"The male has severe burns all over his face and body," city Officer Eric McLaurin said in a statement. "The male's clothing and belongings were also burned beyond recognition."

The body was found near the rear of the train in the vicinity of the power lines that connect to overhead the electrical source, police said. The connection between train and SEPTA power is high-voltage and deadly to the touch.

SEPTA did not provide details about the incident, initially describing it as a medical emergency in a tweet.

Delays of up to 20 minutes on Regional Rail lines were initially reported, but by noon, most of the train lines were running close to schedule.

Check back for more details on this breaking story.

Four people were detained for theft by fraud Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017 for allegedly scamming drivers for money claiming it would be for an infant’s funeral, the Victorville Police Department said.

Police responded to a call of four people running into traffic lanes to collect money from drivers just after 4 p.m. near Bear Valley Road and Mariposa Road, a high-traffic area with shops and gas stations nearby.

Upon arrival, police detained the group of four and found each person had a plastic jar full of cash donated by drivers. They also had a sign that read “Funeral Donations” along with two photos of an infant.

After some investigation, police determined the signs were false. In total, the group collected over $800 in the scam.

The group’s case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office to determine any filing of charges.

Anyone who may have donated cash to the group and anyone with information on the fraud is asked to call the Victorville Police Department at 760-241-2911.

Chargers' Mike Williams Avoids Season Ending Injury

On a warm Thanksgiving afternoon the Los Angeles Chargers captured their second straight dominating victory over  the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.

Rookie wide receiver Mike Williams left the game early in the first half with a right knee injury. At the conclusion of the game, Williams was seen in the locker room on crutches with a knee brace on his right leg.

On Friday, Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn said the team received "very encouraging news" that Williams did not sustain an ACL injury.

"We have ruled out an ACL injury, so that's good news for Mike," Lynn told reporters. "He's meeting with doctors and trainers. We'll see where it goes from here ... but the ACL has been ruled out. I think we can deal with the rest."

Williams leading up to the game against Dallas, recorded nine receptions for 84 yards. Williams showed real signs of progress after missing the entire offseason, and five regular season games due to a severe back injury.

More updates to come on Mike Williams when they are made available.

The Chargers return to action on Sunday Dec. 3 against the Cleveland Browns at Stub Hub Center.

Help Build a CAN-Tree and Give Back

Called upon The Collection at Riverpark in Oxnard over the last few years, right after Thanksgiving? Perhaps you had a bit of holiday shopping to wrap up, or the relatives were still around and the destination proved to be a pleasant, time-passing outing for you all?

Then you likely spied one of the most interesting sights around: Tree after tree constructed solely from canned goods. Nope, we're not talking about the kind of trees with branches and leaves, but rather towers made of food, food destined to be donated to FOOD Share, Ventura's County's Food Bank.

Teams comprised of family members, co-workers, and friends get together to both collect or gather cans and then to build the trees, which isn't the quickest of processes.

But seeing these beautiful symbols of giving-back-a-tude rise over the course of a few days is quite touching, as is the efforts of everyone involved.

You could be that person, if you'd like to find a team of your own. The 2017 CAN-Tree Drive happens from Friday, Dec. 1 through Sunday, Dec. 3 at Figueroa Plaza in downtown Ventura. Note this is a new location, and while the CAN-trees have been an Oxnard feature for the last few years, you'll want to go Ventura this time-around to help out.

Can't make it, or would love to stop by to see the trees, even if you won't build on this year? You can still donate and help FOOD Share.

If you do want to participate, keep in mind that a CAN-tree is generally made up of 600 cans, give or take. You can hold your own drive, or buy those, or make a donation and receive the cans you need.

There's more info here, on signing up and what you need to know.

Definitely, though, stop by and see these trees if you haven't yet. They're decorative and eye-catching, yes, like many things seen around this time of year.

But these special trees, built with love and hope, possess an important role in the community: Note that "...(y)our help goes directly into feeding the 1 in 6 Ventura County residents who is still food insecure."

Bask in the Glow of 5,000,000 Lights

Ever untangled a string of lights, the same string you carefully wrapped and stowed a year ago but which mysteriously became betangled, seemingly without the aid of human hands?

It's a common experience this time of year, but also common, at least among Southern Californians with an affinity for huge lighting displays? The knowledge that however light strings you untangle, the Mission Inn in Riverside will have gone far, far beyond.

As in, 4,999,900 lights beyond, if you hung a string containing 100 lights at home. For the famous, 5,000,000-light Festival of Lights at the landmark hotel pretty much out-bulbs every bulb-filled structure in the near vicinity, and in the far vicinity, too, making the Mission Inn a regular entry on national lists that feature the brightest holiday displays in the country.

The switch-flick? It always happens the Friday after Thanksgiving, so Nov. 24 is the date to watch in 2017. The party starts to sparkle around 4:30 p.m., ahead of sunset, but people won't just be assembling to see all of the illumination: Some 200 animated figures also provide panache and cheer to the exterior decorations (think angels, elves, and more).

And one major rocking bonus for 2017? Kenny Loggins is set to croon at the famous festival's opening night. Yes, lots of fans are expected.

If you can't be in Riverside for the splashy kick-off to the free-to-see display, keep in mind that the lights'll be on through Saturday, Jan. 6, each and every night.

Christmas Tree Shortage Reported Across U.S.

$

People are getting ready to put up their Christmas trees, but a shortage across the U.S. could mean you won't get a tree at all if you wait until the last minute.

For Samantha Radlovic, Christmas tree shopping after Thanksgiving is family tradition. She and her family have been doing this since she was little, early birds looking for the best they can find.

"We usually go home after this, eat dinner, then decorate the tree," she said.

Steve Benveniste, of Toluca Lake Christmas Trees, says his inventory this year will be about the same. But he can't say the same for his competitors.

"A lot of lots won't even be open this year," he said. "I mean, there's gonna be a lot of people that don't even have trees."

The National Christmas Tree Association says farmers in the Pacific Northwest, will be shipping far fewer this year. The recession in 2008 drove many of them out of business or caused many to plant much fewer saplings. Since it takes eight or nine years for a tree to mature, we're seeing the effects of that now.

"I'll end up probably having to close a week earlier," Beneviste said.

The bad news is that prices may be a bit higher, thanks to demand.

Mark Rohlfs, who owns of Santa & Sons Christmas Trees in Van Nuys, said NBC4 this is the worst shortage of his 41 years in the Christmas tree business.

"We've seen this coming for the past five to six years and the severity of it coming is still surprising to us," said Rohlfs, an Oregon Christmas tree grower with a large retail tree lot at Los Angeles Valley College in Valley Glen.
