As drivers travel to Easter and Passover celebrations this weekend, more motorists could encounter LAPD’s monthly DUI checkpoints.

The DUI checkpoints are in place for:

  • 8 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday at Manchester Avenue near Denver Avenue in Los Angeles
  • 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday at Ventura Boulevard near Columbus Avenue in Sherman Oaks

Stepped-up patrols are scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday in the 77th Street area.

Sgt. Sean Karmody said the checkpoints falling on Easter weekend is coincidental, adding that the religious holiday is not a typical "drinking holiday," like St. Patrick’s Day or the Fourth of July.

Still, drivers should be aware of the checkpoints, which aim to get drunken drivers off the road before they can get into crashes.

Karmody, with LAPD Traffic Coordination Section, said the department has been publicizing its checkpoints for nearly three years in an effort to maintain transparency.

"Usually the drunk drivers don’t even pay attention," said Karmody, adding that officers regularly identify drunken drivers at scheduled checkpoints despite publishing locations in advance.

If motorists see reckless driving or notice a possibly drunken driver, they are asked to call 911.
