A 7-year-old boy was hospitalized in serious condition after a shooting that injured the boy's mother as they sat in a parked vehicle Monday night in West Los Angeles.

A 31-year-old man also was injured in the shooting. Details regarding the adult victims' conditions were not immediately available.

Authorities have reported no arrests in the shooting on South Corning Street (map). Police are attempting to determine whether the gunfire came from another vehicle and into the victims' black Dodge Charger, which had several shattered windows.

Investigators found "numerous shell casings" at the scene, according to Los Angeles police. One of the victims drove the others to the hospital, police said.

The boy suffered a gunshot wound to the back. The mother suffered a leg injury in the shooting.

"When are we going to get tired and start working together to rid ourselves of crime in the community," said LAPD Sgt. Cleon Joseph. "Nine years old -- clinging to life. Someone in the community should be upset."

Witnesses told police they saw at least two men in dark clothing open fire, then leave in a white car. More detailed descriptions of the vehicle and gunmen were not immediately available.

Call 310-444-0702 with information about the shooting.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this article indicated the boy was 9 years old. The boy is 7, according to a man who identified himself as the child's father.
