Los Angeles County Sheriff's homicide detectives were investigating on Sunday a shooting by South Gate police that killed a man officers say was armed.

The shooting happened Saturday after 10 p.m. in the 9200 block of San Luis Avenue in the city of South Gate, police said.

The shooting happened while police were responding to a 911 call of a man and woman fighting and that the man was possibly armed with a pistol.

The man was "uncooperative and failed to respond to officers' directions," authorities said.

They shot him when he ran, "continually grasping at his waistband area," police said in a press release.

"At one point the man turned toward officers and fearing that he had armed himself, police shot and killed him," the press release said.

Officers recovered a weapon, police said.

As is routine in officer-involved shootings, independent investigations will be launched into the case by the LA County District Attorney's Office, the Sheriff's Department, and South Gate Police Department's Internal Affairs.
