A Riverside police officer killed an alleged gunman after a firefight late Friday, authorities said.
The shooting occurred just before 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Vine and 1st streets in Riverside. The officer was not wounded.
Before the shooting, the officer was on patrol when he pulled over to confront a man who was getting into a car. As the officer approached, the suspect pulled out a gun and fired three shots at the officer - two that struck the patrol car and one that struck another parked vehicle, Riverside police Lt. Larry Gonzalez said.
The officer returned fire, killing the suspect, Gonzalez said.
