A decorated soldier from Northern California has died from injuries he suffered while on his fifth deployment overseas, the Department of Defense announced Sunday.
Sgt. 1st Class James F. Grissom, 31, died on March 21. He was wounded on March 18 by "small arms fire" in Paktika Pronvince, Afghanistan, authorities said.
A member of the 4th Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group, Grissom enlisted in the Army in June 2003. He served a total of five deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The 31-year-old graduated from high school in 1999 and went on to earn an associate’s degree in computer animation.
Grissom (pictured at right) hailed from Hayward, Calif. He is survived by his wife, parents and sister.
