Police on Sunday were searching for gunmen responsible for killing two men in South Los Angeles.

Police are investigating whether the men were mistaken for gang members. It wasn’t clear if they knew each other, officials said.

The shooting happened at 51st and Figueroa streets just before 5 a.m., said Cleon Joseph, an LAPD spokesman.

Police found the bodies of two men in their 20s after seeing two vehicles in the road that had appeared to be in a traffic crash, Joseph said.

One of the bodies was found inside a car, the other lying on the ground.

The neighborhood was lockded down for hours and people were urged to remain in their homes during the manhunt early Sunday. Several people were handcuffed but later released.

Ronald Harris, a pastor in the neighborhood, called for an end to the violence.

“If there’s ever a time to love each other, [it’s] now,” Harris said, adding a message for the killers.

“Turn yourself in. Admit what has happened and ask God to forgive you.”
