Power outages have left thousands without power - and air conditioning - throughout Southern California on a steamy Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The largest outages struck in Thousand Oaks and surrounding communities starting at about 3 p.m., affecting 4,943 customers, according to a Southern California Edison outage map. Far more people were impacted by the outage, as a customer is a home or a business that usually contains more than one person.

After 11 p.m., those outages were reduced to several hundred customers.

The outages were believed to be due to equipment problems. Crews were working on the problems but it was unclear when they were expected to be fixed.

In Carson, weather conditions caused an outage that affected 640 customers starting just before 6:30 p.m. That outage persisted late into Saturday night.

A smattering of smaller outages darkened other communities across Los Angeles, including dozens of homes and businesses in West Hollywood, South Gate, Rosemead, Duarte, Whittier and Yorba Linda.

Temperatures in Southern California soared to nearly 100 degrees in some areas, with high humidity.

Thousands remained without power into Sunday morning.
