A Long Beach police officer shot a pit bull during a short-lived barricade Thursday morning, police said.

Police responded to the 1900 block of San Francisco Avenue "regarding an unwelcome subject at a residence with a dog," said Nancy Pratt, Long Beach Police Department spokeswoman.

After the police arrived about 10:40 p.m., an officer shot the pit bull. The dog was taken away for treatment by animal control, and its condition was not immediately known.

A witness who said he lived a few houses down said he heard about six or seven shots.

Video from the scene showed police tape lining the street, and a dog could be heard barking.

The reason the officer shot the dog was not immediately known.

Meanwhile, a man was holed up inside an apartment complex for a few hours before being taken into custody about 12:30 a.m.

Additional details were not available.
