A car fire spread to brush along the Ventura (101) Freeway in Calabasas on Sunday afternoon, prompting authorities to close northbound lanes for hours and causing a miles-long traffic jam.
Officials reopened northbound lanes near the Las Virgenes Road exit late Sunday after getting the blaze about 50 percent contained. Full containment was expected Monday morning.
A Volkswagen Beetle began burning about 2:50 p.m. and flames soon spread to roadside brush, according to the California Highway Patrol.
About 15 minutes after the initial call, authorities began trying to close northbound lanes, the CHP said.
About 5:40 p.m., firefighters had the estimated 170-acre blaze about 35 percent contained, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Some homes were threatened, but none were damaged.
More than 200 firefighters from Los Angeles city and county, and Ventura County, were fighting the blaze, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman Kyle Sanford.
Two Super Scooper fixed-wing aircraft were used - possibly for the first time this season - but have since been cleared from the scene.
Seven helicopters were also fighting the fire.
