An iPhone application helped lead police to a carjacking suspect in San Diego Wednesday night, officials confirmed.
At around 8:20 p.m., police say a woman driving a Jaguar sedan was carjacked at Fashion Valley mall in Mission Valley by a man armed with a handgun.
Her car was inside one of the covered parking structures according to SDPD Lt. David Mitchell.
Because the victim left her mobile phone inside her car, police were able to use the “Find My Phone” application.
Officers were able to track down the cell phone and, more importantly, the stolen car.
Police located the Jaguar a short time later in the 5000 block of Guymon Street in the Chollas View area, near Horton Elementary School.
Mitchell said the victim identified the man in custody as the suspect.
His name was not released and the investigation is ongoing.
Lt. Mitchell said it's important that people be aware of their surroundings even when shopping.
“If you have any idea that something is not quite right, go back into the store, notify security and call the police,” Mitchell.
