Huntington Beach police shot and killed a man Saturday morning during a confrontation after a traffic stop.

The incident began before 8 a.m. when officers stopped two men near Glencoe Drive and Silver Lane, Lt. Mitch O'Brien, a spokesman with the Huntington Beach Police Department, said in a press release.

The men got out of a vehicle and ran. After a chase, police got into a confrontation with one man “that resulted in an officer involved shooting,” the press release said.

Police said they recovered a pistol from the man at the location where he died.

The second man ran away.

He was described as Hispanic with a shaved head, 6-feet tall, in his early 20s, and weighing 200 pounds. He was dressed in black.

The officer involved in the shooting is a 9-year law enforcement veteran. His name was not released.

Huntington Beach police did not say why they stopped the men.

They referred calls to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, which is conducting the investigation. A call to the Sheriff's Department was not immediately returned.
