Concern About Radioactive Material Follows Car Crash

A multi-vehicle crash in Duarte on Thursday afternoon prompted the closure of a street and the fear that one car might contain radioactive material, officials said.

One of the vehicles involved in the crash -- which occurred about 1:30 p.m. -- had a container inside that read "Hazardous Material," according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Tony Akins.

A spokesman at the scene said the container held a Geiger counter, which is used to measure radiation levels.

A perimeter was set up so keep people from the area, but once authorities realized the item was only a Geiger counter, the response appeared to be winding down.

Huntington Drive was shut down from Las Lomas Road about a block east to the city of Irwindale line.
