A neighborhood in South Los Angeles was shut down by a police cordon early Sunday during a search for a man in a trench coat who pointed a shotgun at officers, police said.

Police recovered a shotgun from an Arco gas station where theman was last seen after 1 a.m. But officers had not found the man Sunday afternoon.

The man, whose shotgun was supported by a sling under his coat, fired shots at the officers but missed, said LAPD Sgt. Peter Zarcone of the 77th Street Station.

Police fired back, but missed, Zarcone said.

The incident started when authorities were dispatched to the gas station near 54th Street and Normandie Avenue, on a call of a man with a shotgun.

Earlier reports erroneously said the man had fired at officers.

City News Service contributed to this report.
