Powerful rip currents along the coast were expected to create dangerous swimming conditions for Southern California beachgoers on Thursday and through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
The rip currents will be strongest at exposed, south-facing beaches, according to the weather service. Beachgoers should also expect to see higher high tides each evening over the weekend.
Some of the affected beaches are Cabrillo Beach in the South Bay from Venice Beach north to Santa Monica and west through Zuma Beach to Point Mugu, according to a Weather Service hazard statement.
The statement urged swimmers to stay near occupied lifeguard towers and never swim alone, and, if caught in a rip current, swim parallel to shore.
