A baby girl was born in a homeless encampment in the High Desert north of Los Angeles, and responding firefighters helped the father cut the infant's umbilical cord.

The baby had already been delivered inside a tent when San Bernardino County firefighters Friday arrived at the camp in a river bottom in Victorville.

The birth, first reported by the San Bernardino Sun newspaper, was the second time in a week that a homeless woman from the encampment – near Sixth and D streets (map) – went into labor.

On March 9, another homeless woman was rushed from the camp to a hospital, where she gave birth to a baby girl, the Sun reported.

The mothers and children in both births have support and places to live, an animal rescue worker who helps the homeless popular in the Mojave River encampment told the Sun.

"Both families were absolutely over the moon over the birth of the babies," Annie Lancaster, founder of Mojave Animal Rescue, said.
