Officers shot and killed a man who drove over one officer and struck another with his vehicle Thursday night at Ventura motel, according to police.
The confrontation occurred at about 7 p.m. at a Motel 6 on East Harbor Boulevard after officers responded to a disturbance call from the motel. Officers spoke with the subject before he entered his pickup.
The two female officers were escorting the man down stairs when a struggle ensued and the man escaped, guests told NBC4.
"During the encounter a struggle occurred between the male subject and the officers, and the officers fired at him," police said in a statement.
Both officers discharged their weapons, police said.
Two officers were hospitalized with "serious," but not life-threatening injuries, police said. One of the officers was released late Thursday night. The other officer remained in serious, but stable, condition.
"We had reports that the vehicle ran her over, and actually came off the ground and went over her," said assistant police chief David Wilson. "We're very concerned about her condition."
The subject was pronounced dead at the scene. The man had been causing a disturbance at the motel throughout the day before officers arrived, guests told NBC4.
The department is conducting an administrative review of the shooting. The deceased man's identity has not been released.
