Citing environmental concerns about traffic and noise, the labor union representing service workers at LAX said on Thursday it plans to file a legal challenge in court against a plan to expand a runway.
The Service Employees International Union plans to file its challenge in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday afternoon.
They hope to prevent officials at Los Angeles International Airport from expanding the northern runways 260 feet, which would bring them closer to homes.
“The airport authority and the city need to do more to consider the environmental consequences of this project,” said Heather Szerlag, a strategic campaign research coordinator for SEIU.
Airport officials argue they need the expansion to make the airport safer and to handle larger aircraft.
The Los Angeles City Council approved the expansion plan at a contentious meeting on April 30.
Residents around the airport have long campaigned against the runway expansion, saying it will worsen air pollution and traffic, and will not make the runways substantially safer.
