Gallons of water from an underground pipe break flooded residential streets in Hollywood Wednesday night, forced the partial closure of Cahuenga Boulevard and surprised one resident when she arrived home to find her apartment flooded.

The 12-inch pipe break happened near Franklin Avenue and Cahuenga Boulevard. At least one lane of Cahuenga Boulevard is closed early Thursday as crews work to repair the break.

Gallons of water gushed through residents' porches. All but one car was salvaged from a flooded garage, where the waterline appeared to reach the middle of the tires, pictured below.

One resident arrived home at midnight to find mud, debris and water in her apartment.

"There was mud and water all over the floor," said Christine Hawkes. "I thought it was coming from the ceiling -- I didn't realize it was coming from the road. I didn't think too much about what happened. I just started grabbing my stuff.

"I ran into the bedroom because I knew that's where my laptop was."

Hawkes clothes were soaked and the hard-wood floor appeared damaged.

Hawkes' apartment was one of three units damaged by flooding. Water also flowed into an underground parking area.

The portion of Cahuenga Boulevard near the 101 Freeway is not expected to reopen until about 2 p.m.

The pipe is about 80 years old.
