Gardeners in Los Angeles can now get free mulch for their backyards thanks to the Free Mulch Give-Away Program.

Greenwaste is one of the largest components of the city’s “waste stream,” according to The City of Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation’s website.

In an effort to alleviate the waste the bureau designed a recycling program “Closing The Loop,” where the last step of the process is giving away mulch in 11 different locations in the Los Angeles area.

The compost come from residents who trim their trees and leave the trimmings on their curbside for collection. The waste is sorted and turned back into the nutrient rich product.

Aside from being a layer of material added to the top of soil that acts as an insulating barrier it’s also known to improve gardening conditions.
