A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run crash near the University of Southern California campus Tuesday night, police said.

The 58-year-old victim was walking in a crosswalk at Portland and 23rd streets about 9 p.m. when he was hit, Los Angeles Police Department officials said.

There was no evidence at the scene to indicate that the driver attempted to stop, police said.

The man was hospitalized with head injuries after landing about 70 feet from the crosswalk. His personal belongings lay scattered in the street. He died at the hospital at around 11:30 p.m.

The car was described by police as a black, newer model four-door sedan.

"He needs to come back and turn himself in," said LAPD Officer Joseph Cha. "He should've just stopped."

The university advised students to stay away from the area Tuesday night due to "police activity."

Officers said a surveillance camera near the crosswalk may help identify the car's license plate.
