An hours-long standoff in which a man claimed to be armed and have a child with him in a South LA home garage came to an end when he surrendered to SWAT officers Sunday afternoon.
The man barricaded himself inside the home in the 5800 block of 8th Avenue just before 9 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The child was later released from the home, police said.
It was not clear what triggered the standoff with the man. He surrendered to SWAT officers about 4:30 p.m. after they launched tear gas into the garage.
Local pastor David Futch said he spoke with the man on the phone during the standoff, trying to talk him down.
"It ain't worth it, just give it up. It ain't worth it - you ain't going to win," Futch said he told the man.
Police said they had spoken with the man's family.
"I'm just grateful that he came out, his son is free and I know everything is going to be all right," Futch said.
The man, who was not identified, was taken to the LAPD's 77th Street Division station.
