Firefighters quickly doused a 5-acre blaze in Walnut on a hot, windy Friday that saw several other blazes throughout Southern California burn thousands of acres and threaten homes.

The fire in Walnut began about 3:50 p.m. in the 600 block of North Silver Valley Trail (map). Firefighters put out all of the flames by 5 p.m., but expected to spend another two hours or so mopping up, Los Angeles County Fire Department officials said.

Meanwhile, firefighters were still battling the 20,000-acre Springs Fire in Ventura County and a 75-acre fire that is threatening homes in Glendale.
