A man who may have been sleeping atop an elevator in a rapid transit station in San Francisco was crushed to death late Sunday, police said.

Investigators with Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) said they were trying to figure out how the man got inside the elevator shaft at the system's Montgomery Street station.

The call for help from the man came in on Sunday at 9:35 p.m.  A person riding the elevator heard a scream and a crunching sound, alerting authorities about some kind of problem there.

When fire, police and emergency responders arrived, they found the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lt. John Conneely said the man might have been living there, because there were personal belongings on time of the shaft.

It is unclear just how the man got there, and how long he had been in the shaft, Conneely said.

"It appears he may have been sleeping atop the elevator and was crushed," he said.
