Dallas PD Identify Officer Who Shot Man Inside His Own Apartment

The Dallas Police Department has identified the officer who fatally shot a man inside his own apartment Thursday night as Amber Guyger.

Police said Guyger has been with the department for four years and is currently assigned to the Southeast Patrol Division.

Guyger shot Botham Jean when she returned from work Thursday night and entered his apartment believing it was her own.

Guyger was involved in an on-duty shooting in 2017 after a suspect took her Taser from her during a struggle. She was not indicted for that shooting.

Dallas police have not issued a warrant for Guyger's arrest.

Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall said the decision not to issue a warrant came from the Texas Rangers, who are handling the investigation.

"The Texas Rangers had the opportunity to interview the officer," Hall said. "Based on that interview, they asked us to hold off on the warrant until they had an opportunity to investigate some of the information that was provided during that interview."

Lee Merritt, the Jean family's attorney, said the officer should be arrested.

"Everyone that we've spoken to today has presented enough evidence that there was at least enough evidence for a charge of manslaughter," Merritt said.

Snag a Free Glazed at the New Randy's Donuts

$

So you've been baking famously decadent goodies for well over six decades for a doughnut-demanding, sweet-craving public?

Then you truly get, more than most, that Monday can be a bit of a trying day.

That's not to say there aren't Monday mavens out there, but revving up for another hectic week, and finding your inner get-go, can be a bit of a hump to get over, especially after a relaxing weekend.

Randy's Donuts understands.

The iconic doughnut maker is so sympathetic, in fact, that it is holding a giveaway in honor of its newest location, its third shop, which just happens to be opening on the first day of the week.

The giveaway?

A free glazed doughnut, which might be the most classic of all doughnut styles. (We'd respectfully say to cake doughnut fans to not @ us, with their differing opinion on the matter, but we won't, because cake is as classic as glazed.)

The where-to-find info on the new Randy's Donuts?

It's at The Apollo Landing in El Segundo, which is where the free glazed giveaway will be happening on Monday, Sept. 10.

The time?

"Bright 'n early" is the theme here: The freebies begin at 6 in the morning on Sept. 10 and wrap at 2 in the afternoon, which will likely be "bright" but more "midday-ish" than "early."

And remember: This is the new Randy's Donuts, so donut swing by one of the other locations looking for your gratis glazed goodies.

Yes, we said "donut swing by." Of course, do swing by the other locations if you're looking to buy something munchy.

Have you been chowing down on Randy's doughy delights since the early 1950s? Have you been practically raised on buns and crullers created at the mega-doughnut-topped shop?

Then wish it well at its newest bakery, check out the sweet scene, and, if you need to banish your case of the Mondays, arrive on Sept. 10 between 6 and 2 for your pay-nothing glazed doughnut.

A man had to be hoisted to safety after plunging 40 feet down a hole at an abandoned missile site in Chatsworth.

Los Angeles city and county firefighters used a pulley system to raise the man from the hole at the decommissioned Nike missile site in Chatsworth after friends say he fell while they were drinking and smoking during a party there early Sunday morning.

Rescuers arrived around 4 a.m. and were finally able to get the man out of the hole and safely onto a gurney around 6:30 a.m. The man's friends said they are thankful for the emergency workers who saved their friend, who is now being treated at a hospital.

The Nike missile sites are relics of the Cold War era, according to the National Park Service. They housed Nike antiaircraft missiles and were commissioned to defend against possible aerial attacks from the Soviet Union.

About 300 Nike missile sites were active throughout the country between 1959 and 1974, according to the NPS.

Papadopoulos: Sessions 'Enthusiastic' About Putin Meeting

George Papadopoulos, a one-time Trump campaign adviser who was sentenced on Friday to 14 days in jail as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, said Sunday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions was “quite enthusiastic” about his potentially setting up a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. He added that members of the campaign were “fully aware” of his efforts, NBC News reported.

Papadopoulos’ remarks directly contradicts what Sessions told Congress under oath, that he “pushed back” on the potential meeting.

"My recollection differs from Jeff Sessions',” Papadopoulos said on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday morning.

When asked if he believes Mueller’s investigation will show there was collusion between Trump’s presidential campaign and the Russians, Papadopoulos said, "All I can say is that my testimony might have helped move something towards that, but I have no idea."

Five people suffered major injuries and nine others sustained moderate injuries after falling ill at a wedding or wedding-related event near Beaumont, where people were extremely sick to their stomachs, a county fire department spokesperson said Sunday.

Riverside County firefighters, paramedics, and sheriff's deputies were dispatched at 8:02 p.m. Saturday to a wedding venue in the 31100 block of San Timoteo Canyon Road, near the Riverside-San Bernardino line and adjacent to Redlands.

While the Riverside County Fire Department listed the affected as "injured," that term was used to mean "got sick" or "fell ill," said department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

Police from Beaumont and firefighters and police from neighboring cities and San Bernardino County were also called in.

Five people were vomiting violently, and 12 others also suffered illness from a still yet to be determined cause, Hagemann said.

The ill were transported by ground ambulance and a bus provided by the Beaumont Police Department to area hospitals, Hagemann said.

"The Riverside County Fire Department Hazardous Materials Team has ruled out hazardous materials, however, the investigation continues," she said.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is investigating whether there was any "criminal culpability" involved.

Orange County Girl on Mission to Skip the Plastic Straws

There is a 12-year-old who truly worries about the future of the sea, one she often views from below the surface.

"I love going scuba diving," Chloe Mei Espinosa says. "I love seeing the ocean clean, and in the future, I want kids to see that the ocean is clean, and I want them to see the marine animals that I see healthy."

Chloe Mei has taken her concerns and launched skipthepasticstraw.com to help combat an issue near and dear to her heart, and she speaks with conviction and connects with her audience far beyond what would be expected of a 12-year-old girl.

"Marine life mistakes the straws for food, causing them to suffocate, injure or die," Chloe Mei tells a class of campers at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach.

Visuals of a sea-turtle with a straw entirely embedded in its nostril make campers gasp in horror.

This Orange County middle schooler is asking everyone she meets to skip the plastic straw and find another way to drink. Her website, skiptheplasticstraw.com goes one step further and asks anyone who accepts her challenge to go one step further and connect with a local restaurant.

When she speaks to a class, it's easy to see her message is getting through, but Chloe Mei didn't stop there.

Chloe Mei asked her own school district to skip the plastic straws in their cafeterias.

"We apparently go through 10,000 (straws) per day," says Annette Franco of the Newport Mesa Unified School District.

The Newport Unified School District will remove plastic straws from every one of its 32 campuses by January.

"We're hoping that our whole school community can think about it when they're out in public, necessarily at our schools and maybe think a little bit more about what they're doing," Franco says about the change.

Corona Del Mar Middle School, where Chloe Mei attends school, stopped using plastic straws on the first day of class. Other students are aware that soon only paper straws will be available thanks to one young girl and her passion.

"I do think what I'm doing is connecting with people because they start to notice how plastic straws are really bad," Chloe Mei says.

Trump Admin. Takes Harder Line on N. Korean Nukes: Sources

President Donald Trump may be complimenting Kim Jong Un, but evidence shows that North Korea continues to make nuclear weapons — and the U.S. administration is taking a more aggressive stance in response, NBC News reported.

Intelligence shows that North Korea is working to obscure at least one nuclear warhead storage facility, according to three senior U.S. officials, despite the country's rhetoric about denuclearization.

"Since the beginning of 2018, Kim has surrendered and dismantled no nuclear weapons, but has likely built five to nine new nuclear weapons. So he has not frozen his nuclear program and he has certainly not been denuclearizing; instead, he has been nuclearizing," senior RAND Corporation international and defense researcher Bruce W. Bennett said.

While Trump thanked Kim's "commitment to denuclearization" this weekend, his administration is continuing its "maximum pressure" campaign intended to force Kim to denuclearize.

Wayne Farms Recalls Fully Cooked Chicken Products

Wayne Farms, LLC, is recalling about 438,960 pounds of chicken products over concerns that it may possibly be contaminated with metal pieces.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall last week after the Georgia-based company reported receiving a customer complaint on July 27 of a foreign material in one of their food products. After investigating the complaint, Wayne Farms notified the USDA of its findings, the agency said in a news release.

The frozen, ready-to-eat, fully cooked chicken products were produced between July 4 and July 17, 2018 and have the establishment number "P-20214" inside the USDA mark of inspection circle on the top right of the product label.

These items were shipped to distributors, restaurants and further processing locations nationwide.

There have been no reports of injuries from the recalled products, the USDA said. But, the agency noted that it is concerned that these products may still be in customers' refrigerators and freezers. Customers are urged not eat the recalled products and either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.

The USDA said it consumers and members of the media with questions about the recall can contact Alan Sterling, with Wayne Farms LLC, at (678) 450-3092.

Boos at US Open Final Left Winner Naomi Osaka 'a Little Bit Sad'

$

Naomi Osaka didn't see what caused the uproar during the U.S. Open final she was playing against her idol, Serena Williams, so she was confused when it left the crowd booing — apparently for her.

Williams' argument with the match umpire over a coaching violation turned into a point for Osaka, then a game, in a much-maligned coaching decision that helped cement a first Grand Slam win for Osaka. But the 20-year-old said Monday that she had her back turned when the argument unfolded, so she wasn't sure why the New York City crowd was booing during the trophy presentation, which led to her apologizing for the victory.

"I felt a little bit sad because I wasn't really sure if they were booing at me or if it wasn't the outcome that they wanted," she said on the "Today" show. "I also could sympathize because I've been a fan of Serena my whole life and I knew how badly the crowd wanted to win."

Both players cried at the ceremony. Williams asked the crowd to stop booing and salute Osaka to make it "the best moment we can," while Osaka apologized to the crowd.

"I know that everyone was cheering for her and I'm sorry it had to end like this," Osaka said Saturday.

She explained Monday that she was emotional and disappointed with the outcome as well, having dreamt of winning the trophy in a competitive match.

"I felt like I had to apologize," she said.

Williams' argument with umpire Carlos Ramos, which resulted in $17,000 in fines for Williams, completely overshadowed the match, whose first set Osaka dominated 6-2. The second set finished 6-4, with one game awarded to Osaka after Williams repeatedly called Ramos a thief for docking a point for a coaching violation that Williams insisted she didn't deserve.

The Women's Tennis Association joined Williams and a chorus of commentators who said the player was punished for something men get away with all the time.

Osaka said Monday that she hadn't had time to look at the news and form an opinion on what happened in the 36 hours since she won.

Osaka, the first Japanese person to win the U.S. Open (her mother is from Japan and her father is from Haiti), grew up idolizing Williams. She'd played her once before, but she was very nervous because now she was matching up against Williams in a Grand Slam final.

"Right before I was walking onto the court I was freaking out a little bit, but when I went onto the court, it didn't feel like she was Serena, it felt like she was another player," Osaka said.

Williams appeared to comfort Osaka on the dais after the match, hugging her and whispering something in her ear as the crowd booed and Osaka covered her face.

Osaka didn't say Monday what Williams told her, only that it made her happy.

With the win, Osaka rises to No. 7 in the women's tennis rankings, nine places above Williams.

More Teens Prefer Texting Over Face-to-Face Communication: Survey

Most U.S. teenagers value texting over face-to-face communication with their friends, according to a new survey released by Common Sense.

Nine out of 10 teenagers own a smartphone and more are on Snapchat over Instagram or Facebook, the Social Media, Social Life survey reports.

The survey was organized by Common Sense Media as a way to measure how the average teen’s use of social media has evolved.

The first phase of the study was conducted in 2012 and surveyed more than 1,000 teenagers ages 13 to 17. The second phase was conducted in March and April with a separate sampling of more than 1100 teenagers in the same age group.

The first survey showed 68 percent of teenagers considered Facebook as their main social media site. In 2018, only 15 percent of those surveyed say the same thing.

In 2012, 49 percent of those surveyed said their favorite way to communicate with friends was face-to-face. Six years later, that number dropped to less than a third or 32 percent.

Researchers said 54 percent of the teenagers surveyed say they are often distracted by social media when they should be paying attention to the people they are with.

Nearly a third of teenagers who own smartphones said they have been awakened by a notification, call or text received overnight.

When it comes to parents using devices, 33 percent said they wished their parents would disconnect more often. That number was up 10 percentage points from the previous study.

Each September, before fall arrives, but around the time when various breezes are feeling mighty fall-esque, a certain skeleton may be seen on a far hilltop, singing sweetly and possibly rocking a Santa hat.

We're not making that up, though, perhaps, we're putting some poetic spin on the overall picture. But then Jack Skellington, being a bit of a sensitive fellow at heart, might do the same.

For this is the moment when Los Angeles, Hollywood, Anaheim, and all of SouthernCalifornialandia transforms into Halloween Town for a few festive and frightful weeks.

Halloween Town, of course, is the principal setting for "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas," a stop-motion classic that's marking 25 mischievous and macabre years in 2018

So what can you Sally forth to see or Zero in on, Jack fans?

Hollywood Bowl: After a year off, that master of the strange and mirthful, Danny Elfman, returns to present the film sung live, complete with special guests like Catherine O'Hara (hello, Sally) and Ken Page (yay, Oogie Boogie). The dates? Oct. 26 and 27, 2018. And, yep: The 25th anniversary spirit shall be in the air.

General tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8.

Disneyland Park: What's that over in New Orleans Square? Is it a certain mansion, one that's said to be haunted, wearing its seasonal robes? It is, indeed, for Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort is now open. So board a Doom Buggy and spy the famous "Nightmare"-inspired gingerbread house, and all of the glowful decorations, that have become a part of this fall-to-early-January treat.

El Capitan Theatre: Keen to see the movie on the big screen, like you did 25 years ago? And if you didn't see it then, then perhaps you're eager to experience it like fans first did. But there's a twist during the El Cap's "Nightmare" engagement, which haunts the historic Hollywood cinema from Oct. 22-31: The film will be presented in "4D," meaning fog, fragrances, and more. Details? Well, well, well, what have we here? Why the details, of course.
